Cloth Diapering

What's the best way to get rid of stink?

Blue dawn strip?  Bleach?  Vinegar?  It's mainly an issue with my nighttime diapers which are a variety of fitteds and some organic flip inserts.

  • I did a blue dawn strip followed by bleaching the inserts followed by a few more rinses. I recently did it, so IDK if it worked.

  • Yeah I did a blue dawn strip months ago when I was getting build up from Tide....maybe I will try that.  I hesitate to bleach because of the fitteds.  I'm leaning towards a baking soda soak with vinegar in the rinse....but now I'm reading vinegar in hard water can make the stink worse.  Stupid hard water!

  • I recently did an over night basin soak in hot water and dawn (not the blue one), followed several rinses by hand, then bleached the inserts in the wash, rinse, then washed with a little tide and added calgon then 2 more rinse cycles.  We have hard water too and I really think the calgon was key to this whole process.

  • Try an overnight soak with some detergent. When that fails, I add a little bleach and it always works to get rid of any lingering smell.
  • I switched from a natural detergent to Tide original and it got rid of all my "poo" stink.  My diapers were always clean LOOKING, but when I smelled my BG pockets, they smelled like poo.

I really hot soak and bleach, then started washing in tide.
