I'm cutting Charlotte off cold turkey :(

After having some issues with tandem nursing, I've decided to cut Charlotte off cold turkey.  Has anyone else had to do it this way?  I've tried cutting back gradually, but it's not working, in fact she's only nursing more now that Lila is here- not so much as a jealousy thing, but she sees Lila nursing and she thinks "Oh, I guess it's time for us to nurse."  Anyway- I wish that after such a great nursing experience, it didn't have to end like this, but Lila just isn't getting what she needs and Charlotte really doesn't need to be nursing anymore and doesn't plan to give it up on her own anytime soon.  It's tough, especially since she can actually say "Mommy, I want to nurse."  I told her last night when she was nursing that she was a big girl and drinks out of a cup now and that we weren't going to be nursing anymore and she said "Okay."  :(  Of course, she didn't really get it.  She has tried nursing today, I've told her no and she cried and begged me to nurse her (I didn't).  This is so tough.  I'm trying to take the approach that "Ava doesn't nurse.  She's a big girl.  Let's go get a cup like Ava." rather than telling her that nursing is for babies (trying to take the focus off Lila and nursing).  I think she'll be fine in a few days... I hope.

    That sounds so tough.  Hopefully it is only tough for a short bit and I think telling her to be like a big girl is a good approach.

    I'm sorry this is so tough for you.  I also hope she is better about it in a few days.  I have to say that you have given me so much hope for nursing this time around.  I remember you and I had similar problems with our supply for Griffin and Ava, and to see you have been so successful with Charlotte makes me very hopeful!  You have given her to BEST thing in the world, so keep remembering that these next few days even through the tears.  She will eventually let it go.  You've done good momma!

    I'm sorry, Kessler.  That has to be really difficult for both of you.  FWIW I think your approach is great.  Try not to be hard on yourself, you have to do what is best for you and Lila.  I'm sure it will all work out fine.........lots of love and cuddles to Charlotte.

    I agree with all of this!  I think you are doing what will work best for both of your girls!  Good luck!

    It sounds like you are handling it the right way. I stopped nursing Katherine cold turkey but there wasn't someone else nursing to complicate the transition. Good luck and I bet you're right that in a few days it'll be much easier.

    You have done an amazing job with Charlotte and should be so proud of nursing her for as long as you did. I think you've made a difficult decision, but you always have to make the best decision for your family. I hope Charlotte gets it in a couple of days and can move on!

    I hope the transition is going well. I know it must be really hard on you both but like other posters have said, keep in mind what a wonderful experience it has been...what a great accomplishment to have breastfed her for so long. Give yourself a big pat on the back momma!!
