Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your LO go up AND down the stairs?

I was talking to another mom at dc yesterday & she said her LO can go up & down the stairs. She said one day she was in the kitchen while LO was upstairs asleep & after a while LO was walking into the kitchen! She said she has gates, so I'm assuming they were open because LO was asleep. DD can go up the stairs on her own (only if me or DH is right behind her), but I'm afraid to even let her try to go down.

Re: Does your LO go up AND down the stairs?

  • dd started doing this back in November.  I put her up for a nap at my aunts house.  and then a little while later I got out of my office to see if she was still napping...I turned the corner to see her sitting at the bottom of the stairs.  So yes she climbed out of her PnP opened the door and climbed down the stairs! I freaked.  But since then...she is a pro going up and down.  But I am with her all the time she does it.  She refuses to hold my hand now going up.  But still holds my hand going down!

  • No, he can get up the stairs okay, but has yet to try getting down the stairs.

  • I know he can climb up... has been since he was about 8 or 9 months, but I've never let him try going down.
  • she can go up but not down.  DH is in charge of the stairs--i have a phobia since i was little and fell down them and now that i am pregnant i have anxiety even trying to let Piper climb them right in front of me.

  • He can climb up and go down backwards, but we never let him do it alone.  He loves playing on short flights of stairs to walk up and down, but I haven't shown him he can walk down them yet because I don't want him trying to do it on his own!  Right now he'll stop at the top and wait for us to either pick him up to carry him down or have him climb down with us.

  • Yes, he can walk up & down the stairs. He either holds someone's hand, or the handrail/wall.

  • DS can do both and has been able to for a few months.  He's mastered up and down on his stomach and we're working on going up and down standing up.  He still needs a lot of help with walking up and down.

    We've never had gates up.

  • DD can crawl up and down the steps. We have to remind her sometimes about crawling down. She will walk to the top of the steps and then just stand there for a minute and we have to remind her to sit down and turn around and she does this with no problem. We are still with her every time she does either of them. But I do have to admit she has made it up the step with no problem without use knowing about it. We had the gate down during nap time and forgot to put it back up and we turned around and she was already almost all the way up the steps.

  • No- definitely not down, and I wouldn't trust her going up.  I don't think she's stable enough on that last step (when she gets to the top and stands up)- she might fall backwards or slip.

  • Yes, DS (who is 1 yr, 1 wk old) can go up and down the steps.  We took down the gate a couple months ago.  He is really good at crawling up and down the stairs.

Once he decides he wants to walk down the stairs, we'll have to put the gate back up and teach him.

  • Ya DS has been able to do our since he was about 14 months. We felt it was better to teach him to do them than keep him away from them.
  • Yes, he will half walk, half crawl up and down stairs.  If he has to go down a lot of steps, he usually wants me to carry him.

  • Our stairs are very steep, and they only lead up to our bedroom/bathroom/closet, so LO is rarely up there now.  He seems to be able to get up them okay (with me close by), but has shown no interest at all in learning how to get down them yet.

  • A few months after she started walking we would let her crawl up them and she would scoot down backwards on her own. When we would go up and down the stairs through out the day we would encourage her to try on her own (since we were there.)

Now at 22mo she goes up them almost as quick as us and walks down too (and refuses to hold on to anything on her way down- ugh!)

We still gate b/c I need to know where she is at all times.

  • He can crawl up them fine, but I still go behind him because he slips sometimes. As for going down, hes still kinda scared, but most of the time he will sit on his butt and scoot down, but again, I hold him b/c he slips.

  • He can go up and down but we always close the gate. I make him go by himself every time so he practices while I'm there but not unsupervised. DS is obsessed with stairs and escalators, if it was up to him he'd be going up and down all day long (which is a problem when you walk into a store - the little stairs the stores use to put merchandise up top count too, he'll spot 1 in a split second).

  • DD can crawl up the stairs. She's just starting to walk up holding our hands and the railing. She has never been able to get down the stairs independently. She can get down if she holds our hand/the rail, and she can actually walk down better than she can walk up.

  • As soon as DS started going up the stairs, we taught him to go down.  He just slides down feet first on his belly one step at a time.  He's not allowed to go up or down unsupervised, but I'd rather he knows how to do it.  He still gets caught sometimes and DH let him go down before him and he fell (GRRR), but he can do it on his own for the most part for months now.

  • Up yes, haven't really tried down other than like one stair or so on the Gymboree equiptment.  I suppose I'm going to have to teach him sometime, but I'm skurred.
  • Yes, my DS just started going down the stairs.  He's been able to go up for a few months already.  My DH and I have been working with him for the past month on going down the stairs safely.  He goes on his tummy and crawls down.

We have a split level so there is 1 set of 5 stairs and then another set of 4 stairs each, with a landing in between them.  It makes it not as scary for me LOL.  If he slips he doesn't have that far to go.
