Good News first...my baby is here!!!!! a perfect 8lb 5 oz boy, he is now 11 days old.
My question: Yesterday my newborn has been having some trouble breastfeeding. He seemed to be getting it down but now it's like he chokes while feeding. It's like he tries to breathe at the same time he swallows and it goes down the wrong tube. So he ends up coughing and it really kind of bothers me cause he has to stop, cough, and try to catch his breath.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Re: Choking while Breastfeeding?
I've heard of that happening when you are getting a fast letdown. Babies breathe only through their nose for a long time so he shouldn't be breathing through his mouth yet.
How often does it happen? Does it happen at the beginning of the feeding or the whole time? If it is just the beginning I would try to self express or pump a couple minute before feeding him so that your strong let down happens that way and not into his mouth.
If you pull him off while he's feeding does your milk shoot out still?
I never had this problem, I constantly struggled with supply, but I've heard of the fast let down causing "shooting milk" and then making the baby choke on it a bit.
