So we're supplementing breastmilk with formula right now and I think we're soon to be switching to all formula. We're doing Enfamil Newborn because that's what the hospital sent us home with but I'm wondering how you know if it's colic, a milk allergy or just something I ate in the breast milk that's causing a lot of spit up and fussiness.
I know a lot of you have had issues but I never did with J and I'm wondering where to start!
TIA!
Re: Colic and formula
If he's crying all the time and has green mucusy poops, then I'd be thinking milk protein intolerance.
Reflux tends to be crying with feedings, as Jill mentioned and LOTS of spitting up.
Have you talkied to you pediatrician? You might try one of the formulas for sensitive tummies.
M had reflux, but it was "silent" reflux. Which means he'd spit up mid-way up his esophagus and re-swallow it so 1.) we hardly ever saw spit up and 2.) the acid burned him coming up and going back down.
We used Enfamil A/R, which is thicker and helps babies who reflux. I just saw that there's a Target version, which I'm positively giddy about if we end up having to use that formula again.
What are the behaviors you are seeing? Is he avoiding eating? Screaming after eating? Arching? All around fussy all.the.time?? Also, keep him upright for a good half hour after feeding him and try having him sleep elevated.
For the last 3 days he's been up 3am-6am crying nonstop. He will eat if offered but he willoverfeed and then projectile it all over. He's done that 3 or 4 times in the last few days. I've been trying to get him to eat more frequently and smaller meals but at night he's still very hard to wake up.
The last 2 days he's been awake noon-5pm extremely fussy. Nothing soothes him until that magic 6am time. I think that's colic, right? The only way I can get him to calm down is laying him on his side and even that is short term.
I'm racking my brain trying to figure out if I'm eating something that's affecting him and finally took him off all breast milk this afternoon. I have a can of Similac Sensitive that I could switch him to but I don't want to cause more issues by switching stuff around on him.
Ugh - Jaundice, phototherapy, thrush, and now this.

Have you tried gas drops in every bottle? That's what we used to do, just to eliminate that possiblity from the equation. Also do lots of cycling of his legs to get any excess gas out. I also was super anal about bubbles in his formula...I'd mix that stuff and then gas drop it and used Born Free bottles to try and eliminate any extra air. I was desperate for anything to work.
I'd say if the projectile vomiting continues but is only in the middle of the night, it's probably not quite reflux unless he's over-feeding. All babies have a degree of reflux, but if there's a lot of screaming/crying/arching etc with each feed then it's a problem.

Yes - I used to use both for awhile. I figured Gripe Water did little to help so stopped that after awhile. Gas drops are Simethicone (sp)? Like Mylicon. They are probably next to the Gripe water at the drugstore.
I agree with this. Especially the part about overeating. They tend to do it to soothe their throats from the reflux. Is he sleeping completely flat? Jake hade issues at nighttime in the beginning because we were laying him completely flat. Then we determined he had reflux and got a Fisher Price Rock n Play and he slept SO much better. Now he's almost 5 months old and has very few issues with his reflux anymore (he's on Alimentum and takes Prevacid). He hasn't projectiled since he got his 4 month shots and just spits up smaller amounts now.
