NBR: My dog peed on the bed! :(

Earlier tonight, DH got up to get something to drink and when he came back to the couch, he noticed a wet spot on the couch cushions. Even though our dog hasn't had an accident in months and NEVER on furniture, I thought maybe she got too excited and peed a little. We pulled the cover off the cushion, washed it, and febreezed the whole couch.

About an hour later, DH came into the bedroom and noticed a large wet spot on our BED. Yeah... she peed on the bed. It went ALL the way through two comforters, a blanket, the sheets, and the mattress cover. I'm thankful it didn't make it through to our mattress.

I'm thinking this has to be a bladder infection, right? Ugggh. I'm not looking forward to an unplanned vet bill. :(

You could start by trying cranberry juice to see if it helps.  My dog ended up with a stone but the vet had us try adding cranberry juice to her water to see if it helped her before taking her in.

You can give cranberry juice to dogs? I had no idea.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

  • No, this does not have to mean a bladder infection. I have 5 dogs, and the only time 1 of them had a bladder infection, she had large amounts of blood in her urine (like it was noticeably red). However, my youngest dog is only 11 months old and there were a couple of times when he had accidents on the bed and couch. My vet found nothing wrong with him and said that sometimes young dogs can sleep so deeply they don't wake up to use the bathroom. Besides those 3 or 4 accidents, he is completely housebroken and has NEVER peed on the floor. So maybe that is what's going on with your dog. Another sign to look for with a bladder infection is excessive thirst. Hope this helps.

  • how old is she?

I was freaking out the other day our almost 3 year old pup wouldnt go outside to potty before we left for school and work.(it was raining, but that had never stopped her before) She held it for like 18 hours. Luckily she went #1 and #2 right when I got home from class. I was worried she had an infection.

    Good luck!

She's 8.5 months old. DH and I were both home at the time and she had been outside less than an hour before it happened. I was home all day with her and she goes outside every few hours.

Purina Puppy Chow. She eats 2-2.5 cups, twice a day (total of 4-5 cups). Her appetite really varies but we pick up the food after 10 minutes if she doesn't eat it.

She drinks water all day long.

This behavior is REALLY unusual for her. She's never peed on furniture and has only peed on carpet twice as a puppy. Her only "accidents" have been on tile flooring and it's been months since she's had one.

  • Our 7 month old puppy did this yesterday out of the blue but thankfully it wasn't on our bed. We have a memory foam topper and that would really suck. He never asked to go out or anything and looked right at FI and peed on the carpet.

We have a memory foam topper, too. :(  Luckily, there was so much bedding that I don't think the pee went through. I did a spot clean by hand with soap and water and tomorrow I will spray it with a tea tree oil/water mix just to be on the safe side.

  • Tea tree oil is one of my favorite products ever. It works for so many things. Our puppy is still in a chewing phase so I won't leave him unattended near our memory foam.

  • Our cat did the same thing, she peed in our bed and it went through the comforter and sheets but luckily stopped at the bottom sheet and didnt make it to the mattress. She had also been peeing on the floor too instead of her box, and she was 3 and had never had an accident before. When we took her to the vet, He said that she had a bladder infection and was associating her litter box with pain... Maybe your pup is associating the outside with pain, if it hurts to pee outside, maybe it wont hurt to pee inside mentality???

My Siamese will do this. He's 16 years old and will sleep so soundly that he pees. Luckily it has always been his own pet bed. It happens every 6 months or so.

  • Two weeks ago my 7 year old dog had 3 accidents in 1 week. He has never had an accident, so I knew something was wrong. I took him to the vet and he gave him antibiotics. Once he finished his meds, he hasn't had an accident since. Good luck!

You might want to think about changing dog foods, purina is full of unhealthy stuff: corn, wheat, chicken by products, fillers..etc  Check out Wellness Puppy, Earthborn Puppy...

our dog is actually a senior and he was having lots of issues with itching to the point of pulling hair off and leaving red marks. We looked into his food and started giving him Wellness which is all natural (although pricey) but since then his coat has improved and he does not itch anymore. He does have lots of accidents due to his age so that's just something we have to put up with. Thankfully is usually on the floor.

If you have a Costco membership I'd recommend getting their grain free salmon and sweet potato variety.  We were feeding Wellness to our dogs and they were doing well on it, but it is pretty pricey when you're feeding a larger dog.  They've been eating the Costco one now for about a month and are doing great... and we're saving about 18 bucks a bag. :)

  • My 2 year old bulldog peed on a blanket I use all the time on the couch.  He never does things like that, so I told my vet.  He thinks it's because I am pregnant and that I smell different (due to hormones), and we are bringing all sorts of new things into the house.

  • Our 4 yr old rat terrier had a few accidents on the couch recently as well. She used to sleep in her crate at night, but one night just suddenly decided that that was no longer happening. She's usually so awesome about going outside, or she'll go down to the unfinished basement where our cat litter boxes are in a worst case scenario. Both her incidents happened at night, and I'm thinking she was just so deeply asleep that she didn't wake up. We bought some Nature's Miracle (on the rec's of the Pets board over on the nest) to clean the cushions that couldn't go in the wash and it totally neutralized and got rid of any odor.
