Rice cereal poll

Do you give your LO rice cereal yet? What is your reason for giving it? I found out recently DH is in the "cereal for longer sleep" camp and want to know if it actually works. I want to wait as long as possible to start it and don't think LO needs it yet...

Re: Rice cereal poll

  • I will give it at 4 months at the earliest.

  • We started giving LO rice cereal to thicken his formula after he was wrongly diagnosed with reflux. Turns out he had pyloric stenosis instead. We just started adding cereal to his nighttime bottles again a few weeks ago.

    We use brown rice.

  • We started early but only because of his reflux.

  • We're going to try it tomorrow for the first time. She is already taking 8oz at each feeding (FF) and was eating every 5 hours, but has shortened it to every 4 hours herself, so I think she needs more than formula. I think she's also lost the tongue reflex and shows interest in us eating, so we'll give it a shot. She's 4 months old already and our pedi said we could start now. We're starting with organic brown rice.

Sorry she doesn't STTN. Either does N. That's why he wants to try cereal. I've often heard and read it doesn't make a difference. Sounds like you'd agree?

Yeah, it's not going to magically make your LO STTN. It's more of a developmental thing. She does go longer at night than she does during the day but not STTN.

  • Pedi said we could start at 3 months if we wanted to and many of my friends started their kids at 3 months.  I've tried a few times this week but to be honest, he's just not ready.  He still has the tongue thrust and just doesn't get the point yet.  He already STTN.  I don't think they "need" cereal until 6 months or so and I think my pedi is pushing a little to recommend starting at 3 months actually.

  • Charlie's pedi suggested starting rice cereal at 4 months and pureed veggies at 5 months to help with weight gain, but he's just not ready yet. We try a bit of cereal every now and then, but he's still instantly pushing 95% of it out of his mouth. He's been gaining weight steadily, just slowly, so I'm in no rush.

  • I just don't want to introduce it too early if she doesn't need it for reflux. I guess I should research more and make DH read it himself since he doesn't want to believe me. After all, his mom gave him cereal blah blah blah...
  • I know I don't post often, but I just started giving my LO cereal and it made a world of difference. He has taken it really well and it totally changed his night sleeping. He seems a lot more satisfied and sleeps way better. But I think cereal is one of those things that's different for every baby. It helps with Gabe, but obviously isn't making a difference for other LO's on the board. I give him a tbs with his 6 ounce bottle and I started giving it to him because he never seemed satisfied with a bottle. He was literally drinking back to back bottles and at night he was waking up all the time.Since starting cereal we wake up about 8 hours after he goes to bed.

Obviously starting it early vs late is a personal choice and it works for us, but I don't know that I would recommend it just to try and get a baby to sleep through the night, it just happened to be a perk with my LO Big Smile

This exactly. DS gets rice cereal in his bottle for reflux - he is nowhere near sleeping through the night.

I'm glad it's working for you. Just curious, did you talk to the pediatrician first? I feel like I should discuss it with mine before I give it...
  • No reflux, low weight issues here.

I think we're skipping rice cereal & doing BLW around 6 months.  From what I've researched, makes good sense for us.

  • No rice cereal here. I'm going to hold off until the 6 month mark.  We don't have any reason to start her earlier.

  • We have not.  I have no immediate intention to give B solid foods until he's 6 months.  We will see what his pediatrician has to say at his 4 month appt.

At the very least, he has to be able to sit up well and to have lost the tongue-thrust reflex.  I won't consider adding it earlier than that.

I feel like if your baby doesn't have any reflux and seems fine with FF or BF(whichever you are doing) I wouldn't start cereal yet and would definitely talk to your ped. about their recommendations on when to start it.

I didn't talk to our pediatrician first, I knew it wouldn't hurt him to start a couple weeks early. I know our Dr. says I can try at 3 months, so I started 2 weeks early. He's my 3rd, they have all started at different times. My daughter started around 4 months and DS1 a little after 4 months. I knew that DS2 needed something more because he absolutely seemed unsatisfied. I'll tell the Dr. at his 4 month appt, it's a pain in the butt to get an appt or to have a ped call you back here on our base, so knowing it wouldn't hurt him to try it was enough for me.

  • DH wanted me to add cereal to the bottle at like 4 weeks since that was what his mom did with him and then she started trying to get me to do it too. I was not happy when my pedi suggested it would help with LO's spitting up. It was not fun to come home and hear the I told you so's from H and his mom. It worked a little but he still spits up. He did start STTN very early but so did my 1st. Who's to say it is or isn't the cereal. On a side note, I was talking to the pedi about the possibility of DS1's food allergies being from starting solids too early and he said it is possible and we should not start this one on anything before 6 months. Well I guess that it's too late now since LO has been getting cereal in every bottle for the last 10 weeks or so. I'll probably hold off on introducing anything else before 5-6 months.

  • We won't be doing rice cereal or any of the baby cereals. We're going straight to table foods when we think DS is ready.

  • Thanks everyone. Can someone explain the tongue thrust to me?
  • Tongue thrust is the wway their tongues pop out of their mouths, the feeding cue so to speak. If you give them a spoon when they still have a strong tongue thrust they'll just push it off.

I was going to start DD on baby rice around 5 months, in combination with finger foods, like DS, but only if she's showing interest. (He was absolutely ready by 5 months.) But  the ped and LC are saying to wait to 6 months or later, unless she starts catching up on her weight... so we'll see.

  • DH and I are going to try rice cereal with DS around 4 months, but not push it too hard.

MIL has been hounding us to start since 4 weeks (you know, because "that's what I did for my kids so by God it's the only way, current research be damned").

  • I've heard that rice cereal is an old wives tale, so we haven't tried it and haven't really even thought about trying it at all. But, if we do probably wouldn't start earlier than 4 mos
