I was having contractions Monday and Tuesday but nothing consistent. Tuesday afternoon was my doctor's appointment and she decided to induce Wednesday morning. We were to arrive at the hospital that night at 7:30 but to call ahead at 6:30. The hospital was overflowing! We ended up being admitted around 10:00. By 11:00, I received some meds to start softening my cervix. The doctor said that for a small percent of women, this could actually jump start labor and pictocin wouldn't be needed.
Around 11:30 DH decided to run home to check on the dog, put wood in the wood furnance and take a quick shower since we figured we'd be in for the long hall. We live about 45 minutes away from the hospital. Well at midnight, my water broke! I tried calling his cell but we've been having problems with AT&T and I couldn't get through. I was totally freaking out! I just kept calling the house until he finally got home. After letting the dog out and putting wood in the furnance, DH turned around to come back to the hospital.
I was having pretty strong contractions and was already 5cm dilated. I kept feeling like I need to use the restroom. The nurse and DH helped me out of bed and as I'm trying to "go", I had this sudden overwhelming urge to push. They both started screaming at me not to push and had me back in bed. That was the last time I was allowed up. I started screaming for an epi because I just couldn't take it anymore. It took about an hour for them to come in. In the mean time, I did everything I could not to push but sometimes I just couldn't help it.
When the anesthesiologist finally came in, I was in so much pain. I was scared to death of the epi but it wasn't bad at all. Before he left I asked him if he was God. He laughed at me and said, "No, I don't perform miracles." I responded, "That sure seemed like a miracle to me!"
With the epi, I was finally able to get some sleep. By 7:00, my doctor was on duty but my contractions had slowed down. I needed the pitocin to get things moving again. In no time I was ready to push. I had a very hard time getting Nathan past the pubic bone and then eventually needed an episiotomy as well. Poor DH looked mortified when she started cutting. Nathan was still stubborn and the vacuum was needed. The first attempted didn't work and the vacuum came flying out without Nathan. Blood spattered everywhere and even hit a poor nurse in the face. The second attempt was much better. Nathan finally came out. I screamed as he was being pulled out of me. Even with the epi, I could feel him being ripped out.
Nathan James was born March 16th at 9:46 am. He was 8lbs 6oz and 20.5 inches long. As they were cleaning him up, I was being stitched up. My god did that hurt! I tried my hardest to sit still but it wasn't happening. The doctor finally asked if I wanted this done in the OR. Of course I didn't so she gave me some to relax. Fortunately before the meds kicked in, I was able to hold Nathan. From there it was all down hill. I was so loopy that I could hardly keep my eyes open. I managed to breastfeed for 10 minutes and then I was out like a light for the next 2 hours!
Nathan had jaundice and had to stay an extra night under the lights but he is doing much better now. He was discharged at 8lbs 1oz. We had a pedi appointment when he was exactly 1 week and is already up to 8lbs 15oz!
If you made it this far, you deserve a cookie!

Congrats! What a cutie!
It wasn't the best thing in the world, that is for sure. DH and I were horrified at first (and the nurse that got hit with the blood seemed less than amused). But I chuckle at it now. I'm just glad he was able to get out safely!
