Babies: 3 - 6 Months

clear spit up with little bits of white

This has just started happening today.  I didn't get home until 4, but I guess he was doing it on and off throughout the day.  I took his temp and it was fine.  The only thing that I can kind of think of that would cause it is SO gave him 4 tbspoons of cereal, which is the most we've ever given him.  Thoughts?

  • DS  had been doing this off and on not sure why but he is still on formula only. He would also do it several hours after eating. It has kind of subsided and it never seemed to bother him so we didn't worry about it.

Is he teething?  He could be swallowing lots of drool which can cause more spitting up.  I'm not sure but makes sense that it'd be clear.  The bits of white could just be partially digested milk / cereal ?

I feel like kind of an idiot because I have no idea if he is or not?  My SIL asked me if I could "feel anything" on his gums and I have no idea what to feel for...  He's not drooling a lot, but he was making out with Sophie all night.

  • My daughter has been doing this for quite a while, and my pedi said that was a definite sign of reflux. she was diagnosed with silent reflux at 8 weeks. But my pedi also said that all babies have some reflux, and it is normal, so if it isn't bothering your LO, I wouldn't worry. We had ALOT of other symptoms going on to cause us to question this type of spit up.

Oh yeah it's hard to know if they don't have any teeth yet!  J was kind of text book, we had increased drool, very low grade temp, fussier, more chewing on things and I could feel/see the bumps.  He was a turbo-teether, he cut two teeth within a few days of showing symptoms.

If it ends up that he is something I did that J loved was give him a lightly frozen washcloth to chew on.  SO was like "he's not a dog..." but he loved it!

  • My LO had spit up like that a couple of days ago.  It was an hour or so after he ate but it was like a snotty texture with white chunks.  He spit up like like for about 24 hours.  Now his spit up is back to the watery stuff with white chunks.  He seems to feel fine, regular poop, pee, eating, sleeping etc. so I haven't really worried about it.

So, I guess I have no answer for you besides my LO is doing the same thing!

If you find out what it is, please post!

  • DS does this a lot, usually several hours after he eats too, I've always just attributed it to teething drool, he doesn't seem bothered by it so I don't worry about it.

  • I thought the white stuff was curdled milk. LO gets "the chunkies" every couple of days in her clear spit up.
