Cutting out artificial colors and sweeteners

Has anyone done this?  How hard is it?  I'm considering trying to cut them out to control my migraines.  I'm already dairy-free and I feel like that's a big sacrifice, so I don't want to make myself totally miserable.  Then again, it would be nice to get rid of my headaches without taking meds every day.

  • not sweeteners ( I like my splenda in my coffee) but I avoid artificial colors. Eli's pedi suggested cutting them out of his diet to help control his behavior. aparently there is a link between them and hyperactvity.

  • I try to limit our consumption of artificial colors, especially for Max, but man is it hard. They are in almost everything it seems, except anything certified organic. I guess in your situation I would try it for a couple weeks, if it helps it would be worth it to me, if not at least you'll know. I hope you find something to help, seeing DH go through it I have a lot of sympathy for those of you dealing with headaches on an ongoing basis.

  • I don't have advice, but I wanted to say that I hope you can get your migraines under control - that must be miserable.

Have you seen a difference in his behavior?

  • The easiest way for us has been to pick one thing at a time, and a) never buy it again, b) replace it with a better substitute. If there isn't a better substitute, then we probably shouldn't be eating it all. It's been slow going, but we have almost completely eliminated HFCS from our diet.

With the artificial coloring - I did see a difference in Lukes behaviour when we eliminated it, but I wasn't sure if it was the coloring alone, or the fact that we upped his DHA and Magnesium intake.

  • I gave up 95% of my artificial sweetener consumption when I gave up diet soda a year ago.  I have diabetes and my doctor would rather I eat real sugar on occasion then chemicals. It was a rough first week and it kept getting easier.

  • Aside from the dye I use for the occasional birthday cake I can't remember the last time we have had artificial colors/ sweeteners. I would say 2004 or 2005. We also swore off fast food at the same time.

  • I don't know if you've thought about it and I don't know how common it is anymore, but have you thought about msg being a factor? My brother was getting migraines all the time (like almost daily for awhile) and after eliminating different things, he discovered that msg is what was causing it.

Boo for migraines. They suck and I totally feel for you. I don't have any ideas for cutting out artificial colors and sweeteners other than that my grandma just reads every label. She can't have dyes, so if it has yellow, blue, whatever... She just doesn't buy it or eat it. Good luck! I hope that your migraines take a hike!
