I am currently 30w and 2d pregnant. When I was 16w and 2d I went to triage for what I thought was a kidney stone or infection. After lots of pain and tests they found that I have an 8mm kidney stone blocking my right ureter. They immediately sent me to the interventional surgery center and placed a nephrostomy tube in my right kidney. A nephrosomty tube externally drains my right kidney since the stone blocks the urine from draining the way it's suppose to. When you are in your 1st and 2nd trimesters, my understanding is that this is standard procedure for a pregnant girl because they try not to put you under general anesthesia unless it is absolutely necessary. In my case there was another option and that's the route the high risk Dr.s at the hospital recommended.
It was very painful but after a few weeks just became my life. I have had minimal pain and few issues with the tube until recently. They have had to change the tube every 2-4 weeks and I now have to have my tube replaced every 10-14 days and it requires radiation every time. Also at 27w 4d I was admitted to the hospital for a bad kidney infection. I luckily never became symptomatic and they kept me in the hospital for 3 days to make sure I was stable. I was actually the one who said that I felt something wasn't right and that I wanted a culture ordered which revealed the bad infection. I now have a midline placed and give myself iv antibiotics twice a day till the end of my pregnancy and for 48 hours after I have the kidney stone surgery. I just had a culture and it showed no infections so now we are on a positive track again.
I recently changed urologists because of multiple reasons and now have been given different options, one of which is to go in and remove the stone. He assures me my only risk is preterm labor. This is why I want to post on this board. With my son I had him at 39w 6d and he was healthy. He did go to the transition nursery for a few hours but never had to go to the nicu and was discharged with me after almost 3 days in the hospital. The urologist says that he will perform the surgery at any time but said I may want to wait till 32w. I don't know if I feel comfortable with having the surgery unless I have more issues. At this point if I get more infections I'm at risk to loose my kidney or go into labor because of another infection. If I get another infection the urologist said that it would become a recommendation, not an option and OB said if it is bad enough they they will take the baby.
I really would like advice from you girls, who have had children in the nicu as I fear we are going to have a baby that will end up there if I deliver anytime in the next 5 weeks, or even after as no one is every guaranteed a healthy child no matter how far along they are when they deliver. Currently I'm thinking of having the surgery around 34-35 weeks because if I go into labor then the baby would be much stronger than he/she is now. Any advice from someone who has been in my situation before and had to have surgery and if their child was born preterm I would greatly appreciate it!! If there is anyone even out there....
Re: XP:Anyone have premie bc of preterm labor from surgery?
My baby wasn't born prematurely because of surgery, but I just wanted to give you some reassurance anyway. If you do deliver at 34-35 weeks, that gives your baby awesome odds as far as short term/long term effects of prematurity go. Obviously, every baby is different and you never know what's going to happen but there are so many great, hopeful stories out there.
Good luck and I'm sorry you're having to experience this...
I just wanted to say I'm sorry for all that you have been through:(
If you have a choice in the matter, I would wait until 34 weeks, as that is a huge milestone for a preemie like the above posted said:-)
::hugs:: I can't imagine how stressful and painful this is for you. And what a rough decision to have to make.
I agree with the pp who said 34 weeks is a big milestone. I was 33w5d and the doctor told me that they wouldn't stop my labor once it started - I went into the hospital since my water broke the morning of DDs birth. You'll also be able to get the steroid shots which will help with lung development.
