DD1 is 18 months. DD2 is 5.5 months. Last night we took a deep breath and put them in the same room. Here is how it went:
DH was out, so I gave them both a bath and then took them both into the nursery. I dressed them both, and nursed DD2 in the glider while DD1 played for a bit. Then I put DD2 into her crib awake (this was about 8 p.m.) and she passed out while I read and sang to DD1 in the glider. I put DD1 in her crib at about 8:30, then walked out.
At 2 a.m. I heard DD2 and I dashed out of bed and across the hall. Seems that the baby's crying had not woken up DD1, but my entrance did. She started to cry, but I couldn't do anything as I was nursing DD2 in the glider. After about a minute, she put her head down and went back to sleep. I finished nursing DD2 and put her in her crib.
We heard DD2 again at 5:45. Again I ran in there, and again my entrance woke DD2 (I swear I was quiet!). This time DH came in to pick her up and rock her, standing, while I nursed DD2. When I put DD2 down into her crib, he got into the glider with DD1. He put her down and came to bed a few minutes later. Around 6:15 I woke to him getting out of bed (guess I must have fallen asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow). He said he couldn't sleep and was going to go to work early. I fell asleep again. At 6:45 he brought DD2 in to me - he said she had been crying. He said DD1 was rustling when he walked in, but didn't seem to have woken. DD2 latched on and we both went back to sleep until 8 a.m., when I got up and left her in bed. She slept until 8:45 and DD1 slept until 9:30 (she usually wakes at 8!).
Not a bad first night. I do feel really bad for
disturbing DD1's sleep. I think we will try it a few more nights and see
whether she adjusts like everyone says she will. Hopefully it won't take too long.
Re: Put them in the same room last night
I do nurse her at night. I don't necessarily dash as quickly as I did last night, though.
Thing is, we don't have an extra room for her. She either sleeps in our room (which causes her to wake more), or in the sewing room/guest room/office, which is really inconvenient for us because we can't get any work done when she is in bed, and that's the only time we have. So this had to be done sometime!

That sounds like a fairly successful night! My 2 share a room and it was all going fabulously until recently. Now DS will wake up and SCREAM (for no apparent reason) until we come and get him, and in the process he wakes DD. We have played musical beds for the last few nights. DS in his room screaming, so we move DD in the room with us. Then we give in, get DS up and in the room with us, so DD goes back to her bed (since even though we removed her from the room with the screaming, she can still hear it and can't go back to sleep). Then DS goes back in bed and hopefully they all keep sleeping. Last night, DD woke up an hour later crying, so I ran in to get her before she woke DS up again...then she slept for the rest of the night in our room in the pack and play. I am praying they both STTN tonight. I can't take much more!
Our next plan is to re-Ferber DS and when we do, we will move DD to sleep in the family room in the pack and play (a floor away, so hopefully she will sleep through the crying).
Thankfully we are moving in a month and a half, and they will each have their own room. We had planned to keep them together since they were doing so well, but now we can't wait to separate them!
Hope you guys have more luck than we do!
