The key to overnight diaper leaks?

I haven't done a randomized, controlled trial yet, but we had the worst problem with DS's diaper leaking all winter long.  No matter what size and brand we tried, he would leak through.  The weather is warmer now, so I switched him to 2-piece PJs.  Not a single leak in over a week.  All I can figure is that the waistband of the jammies keeps the diaper on tighter.

Has anyone else found that the type of pajamas makes a difference?

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • It doesn't seem to make a difference for us, but I have heard one or two others say this worked for them as well. So maybe there is something to that?

  • Yes, but we have the opposite issue over here. The waistband of her two piece PJs seems to get trapped underneath the top of the diaper, causing more leaks, not less. Boo!

  • We had so many issues and I just stopped giving him anything to drink 2 hours before bedtime. He gets a sippy of water with dinner, but he only drinks an ounce or two and that's about an hour before he goes to sleep.

exactly the one piece pj's are better for dd ...no leakage. 2 piece seems to get trapped.

  • Don't know about the pajamas...but I am so thankful for Huggies Overnites! At first I thought it might not be worth it...but I buy a pack when they're on sale with a coupon and it has totally paid off! They're the same price as regular Huggies, so I'm just using one of those instead. Not one leak!!!

Yeah, I have those, but DS still leaked through all the time.  And he does not drink a sippy or bottle at bedtime, just a few sips of water.  It is so bizarre.

  • Not sure but we use these little booster pads from BRU.  They are the BEST!   They are like $3 for 30 and I slip one in his diaper overnight (12-13 hrs) and he has had maybe 1 or 2 leaks in a year+.  GL!

  • We use the Huggies brand pull ups for overnights. Never had a leak with them. I got the 2T-3T size, even though it isn't his size, he was in the weight range.

  • I've discovered that eliminating a onesie under the jammies cuts down on leaks. It seemed like the onesie would compress the diaper and give it less room to expand with pee, so DS would just leak everywhere (and wake up super early because of it!).

  • We just got the BRU inserts yesterday and his jammies were dry this morning! This is a miracle for us because he has been wetting through everything for a few months, including the Huggies Overnights. Here's hoping they work as well tonight and that last night wasn't a fluke!

  • We were battling this for a bit with Huggies Overnights.  Genius DH decided to look at the actual diaper before putting it on DD and noticed that the absorbant pad was completely crooked in the diaper!  I've been inspecting each one I put on DD and they all seem to be off in this batch, so I'm trying to almost put the diaper on crooked.  This whole week so far there have been no leaks.  This may not solve your issues, but if it seems to be all of a sudden, it's worth a peak at the diaper construct itself!

    this.

  • We had the same problem, but it didnt go away when we put him in 2 piece PJs. We also tried different brands, sizes, etc...... Our life saver was just plain diaper covers. We found a pack of them at Target and they've been a life saver. No leaks or anything. DS #1 has to go to bed with a sippy in his hands since he gets a dry throat really fast so limiting his intake just wont happen.

I'd deff look into the covers though. They're pretty cheap and you can just throw them in the washer and dryer to clean them. :)
