Trouble TTC

If you're doing IVF, how're you paying for it?

Are you using savings, borrowing money from family, putting it on credit cards, or doing some sort of financing like Attain?

My 2nd IUI was a BFN, and I'm starting to consider IVF, though I thought I never would, due to the cost.

How have you (or will you) pay for your IVF?  Are you enrolled in a refund program or a multiple cycle discount program?

Re: If you're doing IVF, how're you paying for it?

  • We have a few more options before IVF, but we have thoroughly discussed it since it is likely we'll need it.

We want to avoid going into debt. Right now we could pay for one round. (My RE does not offer refund or multiple discount programs). My parents have offered to lend us the money and we may take them up on it if we need a 2nd or 3rd round. Our last choice would be to finance through a medical loan, but we are praying it doesn't get that far.

    Best of luck!

We used our savings (however, we did put it on credit card first to get the points/cash back, but we paid it off same month).

Because of my Dx, we didn't qualify for shared-risk programs.  We paid for a 2 cycle plan before IVF #1.  We also won a cycle with physician's fees waived.

  • Hi there!

We're paying for it out of savings.   My rainy day funds have taken a hit, but hopefully it's worth it.  I'm not enrolled in any refund program or discount program.  I am have no idea what we're going to do if this doesn't work. Confused

  • I'm not doing IVF (and I don't know if I'll ever have to) - but my sister/BIL have offered to let us borrow the money, if needed.   It makes me tear up just thinking about it.   I really wish more insurance compaines would pay for it though!

Good point.  We didn't know we were going to have IF treatments when we set aside FSA dollars for 2010.  However, we did know that we were going to do at least one IVF cycle in 2011.  So, MH and I both maxed out our FSA accounts.

  • We've been using our HSA and FSA's for costs so far, and if we end up needing it, we should be able to do one IVF cycle with that. If we need to do more, we'll probably get a 0% interest credit card (preferably one with cash back) and then pay it off before the 0% term expires. We did that for our wedding and it worked well for us.

My state already have this coverage. While I am so, so grateful that my insurance covers testing and all IUI costs, it does not cover IVF at all. Some states (I believe) require full coverage, and some only partial. Partial coverage states almost always exclude IVF and FETs. :(

  • My husband received an inheritance from his grandmother- who would, very much, have loved to see great grandchildren. We are using it to pay for the IVF. If not for the inheritance, IVF would be completely out of our reach.

If you are entirely out of pocket there are several programs your pharmacy can enroll you in to help lower the cost of the drugs. It's still going to be quite expensive- we're out 4800 and will have one more smallish order on Monday (maybe more later but I hope we don't run long or need to up my dosage significantly), but it's better than it would have been without.

  • We have to get a personal loan from the bank, but the RE we're using has some sort of contract with a few of the local banks and they offer a better interest rate than the regular personal loan. Ours is 25k, but we are participating in the shared risk program....3 fresh IVF, unlimited fet's, and Icsi and if none of it works 70% back. If it doesn't work, I don't know what we'll do. I don't know if we would go through it again. Our meds will be oop.

  • I don't have any savings. We would have to get a medical loan.  I just wanted to point out that if you didn't put enough money into your FSA or HSA, you can still claim medical expenses on your taxes.  If you spent over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on medical than you can deduct it from your taxes.
