Kid safe paint for outside wood craft projects?

Is there such a thing? Before Dad died he went on a woodworking spree and now mom is left with about 15 unpainted wooden bird houses! I was thinking of letting John paint one for our backyard but I'm not sure what kind of paint will hold up and be ok for John (not that he's going to eat it or anything, just think there must be something out there). I'm mad at myself now for tossing the one he hand painted for me last time we moved, but I know there are plenty more!

Any ideas?
