Which one is better?

Re: Pampers vs. Huggies

  • I always liked Huggies. I think Pampers always makes the baby smell like pee anytime its wet at all.

  • I hear it really depends on your baby, and to not 'stock up' until after your LO is here because your baby may have an allergic reaction to different kinds.

Since it really isn't practical to bring a newborn home without any diapers, I have Pampers Sensitive to start off with because I've only heard good things about them.

  • My friend with two kids has favoured each one for each child.  Her little girl used pampers better (less explosions) and her second little boy did better in huggies.  It sounds like we won't know until LO's are here.  She did say near the beginning most anything works.

I'm trying to start with huggies due to the pampers controversy about 'rashes'.  If we need to find something else, we will.

  • I started out using Pampers Swaddlers for newborns.  I liked them.  We never had a problem with leaks or whatever so I just never switched or tried other products.

  • Between Pampers and Huggies, I choose Pampers. My DD had the most blow-outs with Huggies. Personally, I prefer Luvs. They are quite a bit cheaper than either Pampers or Huggies and they worked just as well. Just NEVER NEVER NEVER buy store brand!!!

  • We have both brands in the house right now (we got them from the shower). I'm planning on starting with Pampers, but we'll see... I've also heard it depends on the baby.

  • i also here that it depends on your baby. a friend of mine had a ton of leftover newborn huggies so i will be using those as far as i know but she also had a few pampers in there so i will get to compare.

if you have a shower and get a bunch of diapers of different brands i would start with those and compare the brands before stocking up.

  • Im a first time mom but I've done a ton of research and read a lot of other mother's opinions about diaper brands.

Pampers recently introduced "Dry Max" diapers...Quite a few mothers have said the special chemical that is supposed to help keep the diaper dryer turns into a kind of gel once baby pees and causes a severe rash/chemical burn.  I don't want my baby's precious lil' bottom getting a painful chemical burn so I'm staying away from pampers and sticking with Huggies.

This exactly! Huggies always leaked for my DS and Luvs are soooooo much cheaper. i wont buy anything else. i defiantly agree not to buy store brand!

  • It really depends on your baby.  One DD couldn't wear Pampers and one couldn't wear Huggies.  It wasn't just a rash issue either, we had issues with leaks, blowouts etc. with each baby.

I disagree with PP about store brand diapers.  We use Target's Up&Up brand and we have had really good luck with them.  They are half the price for the same amount of diapers as both Huggies and Pampers.  Before we discovered them, we used Kirkland brand diapers from Costco and they were exactly like Huggies.

ETA: BOTH of my girls had horrible horrible rashes after using Luvs.  Most hospitals will provide you with Pampers Swaddlers for your stay.

I'm going to try Huggies Pure & Natural and see how it goes.

I LOVED huggies pure & naturals when DS was a newborn. Loved them.

We tried both, but he peed right out of the pampers, and then I heard about the burns with Pampers so we started using huggies exclusively until just this last month. Since we are starting to potty train I just get cheap Parent's choice diapers from wal-mart since they are constantly coming off.

We will be doing huggies pure and naturals with DD.

  • I prefer Pampers for babies because they are softer :)  DS used Target's Up&Up  for a couple months around 18 months but then they started giving him a rash right above his penis so we quit using those and went back to Pampers. We've tried the Kirkland (Costco) brand and they were fine, but still not as good as Pampers.

  • I asked my friend with two children what she thought, and she said that she likes Pampers best for newborn and size 1, but after that, she prefers Huggies.  So that's what DH and I are going to go with, and we'll see how it goes!

I've heard the same thing. It will depend on your baby's skin and shape. Diapers fit every baby different, so ones that leak for one person might work great for another, so its not advised to stock up before the baby is born. We plan on getting smaller packages of different brands to see what works best for us.

  • I also disagree with PPs about not using store brand. We used Pampers swaddlers when DS was a newborn, but when they added the DryMax to them, he got horrible rashes. We started using Target brand Up&Up and they are amazing, we havven't had any issues at all.
We plan on starting this baby out with Up&Up also to see how things go.

  • I don't know yet, but everyone tells me Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive (wipes, too).  I also got a small pack of Huggies Little Snugglers to try as well.  They say the best thing to do is try a small pack of each to see which works best for you.

Not all Pampers have Dry Max. The Sensitive Swaddlers don't, so we're starting out with those.

  • DS has been in Pampers since day 1 and we've never had a problem with the rashes that others have reported. He started out in Swaddlers, and is currently in Cruisers. We haven't had any major problems with leaks, rashes or blow outs.

My plan is to stick with the Pampers for DS#2 and see how it goes.

  • My nephew got the chemical burn/rash from Pampers and after seeing it in person, I just can bring myself to take the risk of it happening to our LO.  They actually use Kirkland/Costco ones now and swear by them.  I've heard good thing about Up&Up too.

We're CDing and I'm going to try the Up&Up first for the occasions where we need disposables, then just go from there with other brands if we need to. I just don't see the purpose in spending money on a name brand diaper if the store brand will work- it's a poop catcher, and if it hold the poop without a rash it's good in my book :)

    this exactly.

  • I used Pampers Swaddlers with both my kids until they grew out of them (so N, 1 & 2), then switched to the Target store brand.  I plan to do the same with this baby, although I will probably avoid the ones that have the DryMax.

  • Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive sizes NB, 1, & 2 do not have drymax.  ALL babydry are drymax free as well.

It really depends on your baby.  With Cole, only swaddlers worked in the beginning.  He peed RIGHT through Huggies snug n dry.  Then, around size 3, when he started walking, ONLY babydry fit him because they are cut much more narrow.  He's now in size 5, and STILL we HAVE to buy babydry.  For Cole, Huggies little snugglers also had a weird bacon smell when he peed in them.  I know this sounds crazy, but my husband was holding him and asked what I was cooking - nothing.  It was the diaper.  We knew EVERY time he peed, because it smelled like BACON!

Luvs work just as well and made by the same people as Pampers.  However, they are VERY perfumey - I actually couldn't go in the room where we stored them because it was overbearingly strong.  Some people really don't mind it though, and they are cheaper.

We are starting out with Swaddlers Sensitive again, and we will go from there.

  • I used Pampers when my daughter was a newborn and they were fine.  I use Huggies now when we do disposables.  There are different types of Huggies and one type I like and one I hate.

I disagree with pps to never buy store brand.  In my experience, it's hit or miss.  Some store brands are just as good as the brand name diapers and others aren't.  I think it probably depends on your individual child and their body.  For example, the Sam's Club diapers just don't fit my daughter's body right so she had tons of leaks with them.  But they might fit another kid just fine.

  • Well, a year and a half ago I would've said Pampers.  And then they made the switch to Dry Max, which made DD break out in a horrific rash on her bottom, and after dealing with them and their nonsense, I would never put a child of mine in a Dry Max diaper again.  As a result, we switched to cloth and Huggies Pure and Natural.  For this baby, I intend to use cloth again but for the first few weeks we'll be using Huggies Pure and Natural and Pampers Sensitive (newborns do not have dry max)--I bought a package of each, and we'll see what fits Baby best.  Then I'll do a cloth diaper trial and we'll go from there--I'm reluctant to stock up on CD's only b/c it took us a few different ones to find out what fit DD best, and I can imagine the same might be true this time.  So I want some disposables on hand in the meantime.

  • I just got 8 packs of Seventh Generation 1's, and 1 pack Pampers sensitive.

I was ignorantly thinking that that would last me a year.

    Yep.

Then I read how many diapers babies go through a day.

    ANd I nearly fainted.

  • Not all Pampers use drymax, so it is silly to refuse to use them simply because of the possible rashes from that. If you READ the package, you will see that there are several Pampers that don't use Drymax. That said, we are doing Pampers Sensitive. I tried all kinds with DD1 and liked Pampers way better than any other kind.
