Washington Babies

Should I be concerned?

C's vocabulary has been non existent lately. He used to be able to say kitty, dog, bottle, please, thank you (a variation at least), baby, nose, yes, and other words aling with signing all done, milk and more. Now all he says is mama, hi and bye. Now, I know all children are different, but I am wondering if I should have him evaluated. He has gone back to grunting and whining for everything despite my best efforts to have him say what he wants. I narrate everything we do all day and pick up items to identify them with him, but it just seems like he is going backwards...

Re: Should I be concerned?

  • how long has this been going on?  Maybe he doesn't feel like it?  I know sometimes A is just in a mood and even though he knows how to do something he just won't.  I think if it's a pattern for awhile you could talk to your ped.  Hope things turn back around soon.

  • Sometimes kids just go through periods of regression.. in my baby class they called it "regression in the face of progression". How long has he been doing it? Just a few weeks, few days, going on a couple months?

    Here's a link I just Googled to find: https://www.whattoexpect.com/toddler-behavior/toddler-regression.aspx

  • I really noticed it a little over a week ago, then realized it had been a while since I had heard real words from him. My H wants to wait a while longer before talking to his dr. I was just caught off guard.

  • Honestly, since it's mostly a verbal/communication regression, I'd be a little concerned. His 18mo appt is coming up pretty quick though right?

  • K --  I sent you a request on FB.

Yes, you should be concerned, and should make an appt with your Dr and 0-3.  Loss of language like you are describing is not typical.  You can wait for your Dr to make a referral to birth-3 for an evaluation, or you can call and set up an appointment yourself.

If you send me a note on FB with where you are, I can point you in the right direction... centers are regional.   We live in Renton, and my kids went to Childrens Therapy Center in Kent for Physical therapy.

It may be nothing.   It may be that he is working so hard on other skills (motor etc) that his language is lacking.   But LOSS of language is a red flag to check out.

Yes, actually his dr said to make his well child visit anywhere between 15-18 months; closer to 15 if I had concerns, 18 if we were doing well. I will call to make an appointment for next week.

Thanks! I actually know where CTC is, I used to live off of Kent Kangley. We live on the West Hill currently. I had just sat and really thought about it and all of his verbal communication seems to have gone out the window. It is hurting my husband even, C won't say "dada" anymore. He won't sign...just grunts and points.
