How do you change a set in stone Night Time Routine?

I'm all about routine, and it gets the kids to bed by 8:00

Things we do now that still HAVE to be done:

5:30 or 6 - dinner,

6:30 Willow's bath (must bathe every night due to her severe excema)

7:00 Night Night show, would love to get rid of this, but it's ingrained in her routine for over 2 years

The bed, but her "in the room" routine can take anywhere to 45 to over an hour.

DH wants to get the kids "out" and not infront of the Wii and/or Boob Tube, so he'd like to take evening walks.  Which is great - but I think it would move all the things we need to do to further out at night.

Here's the problem.  Do we just "do that" - Rod is already exhausted by 6 pm (he wakes up at 3 am)  It seems great but MAN we are so tired with dealing with the kids by 6 pm, are we killing ourselves adding it - or will it be good family time?

  • I think it would be great. We do dinner between 5-5:30 (might be hard depending on what time you get home), then a long (45 min) walk/bike ride when the weather allows.  Home, bath, books bedtime. W down 7:30 M at 8.

  • Our routine isn't set in stone yet, although we're working on that now that she's getting older.  I can tell you that we try to go out for a walk every day (rain or shine), and E falls asleep and sleeps much better on the days that we get outside in the afternoon/early evening.  Could you shorten the tv time or book time at all?

  • Just try it for a week. Try a walk and then a shorter show. Or a walk every other day and show on the others. And maybe figure out how to make the in her room part take less time. What do you do fir an hour??
