It took me a bit to get back into running after DD was born, but I was told to stop running by my doc at 6 months. I was just doing maintenance runs when I got pregnant (5-7 miles) at about an 8-8:30 min/mile pace. So, I'm finally starting to feel like myself running wise, can hold a 9-9:30 min pace (if I'm feeling good, ha), and feel good during the runs. However, if I run longer than 3.5-4 miles, I get HORRENDOUS runner's trots. I have the diarrhea cramps all evening and through the night, and it doesn't matter if I go to the bathroom 2 or 3 times or can't go at all, I am miserable. It pisses me off, because, again, I'm feeling like myself again, running-wise, and this is making me hesitant to run. I had this problem with prior to pregnancy, but only after 10+ miles and they never lasted that long. I do breastfeed, so I don't know if it's a hydration thing or not. However, I chug water all day and pee constantly as it is.
Has anyone else had this problem after pregnancy? It is so.frustrating. I wanted to run my next half marathon in May (was signed up for a half and a full when before I found out I was pregnant, and couldn't run, obviously, because I was told to stop). But if I can't run longer than 4 miles without these stomach issues, obviously that's not happening. I'm trying to just enjoy running 2-3 miles at a time, but I want to get to the bottom of this. I have a doc appointment, but it's not for a couple of weeks. So...any advice? Sympathies? Thank you ![]()
Re: another post for running mamas: TMI and long
I wasnt a runner and Im not much for any kind of workout but from what Ive been told from lots of friends of mine that have had babys it takes a long time for your body to get back to what it was. And every pregnancy and healing is different. Maybe your body is just taking longer to heal this time. Have you tried taking a little break inbetween the miles to stop the cramps from coming? I hope you find an answer.
I had the same issue pre-preg and luckily it seems to be holding at the over 10 rule. It's called Ischemic colitis, your circulation to your organs slows down when your running. They go Ischemic and then when the blood rushes back in after your done running that's when the trouble starts.
What helps me is actually drinking water WHILE I'm running. If I am going to run over 10 miles I have a small camelback (I think it's made for bicyclists) and I take small sips from it every 1/2 mile to a mile. The trick is to not drink so much you feel like your sloshing. Just enough to keep your mouth wet. It seems to keep my stomach and bowels from cramping up after.
If you have a small camelback be sure to turn it upside down after you fill the bladder and suck out all the air. This keeps it from sloshing around when you're running.
I had to LOL when I read this b/c I'm right there with you. Before a marathon/half I always take an imodium *just in case*
For training, I try to just keep an eye on my diet and not have any "trigger" foods near a long run. Stress can also be a big factor for me. As a race gets closer, I get more nervous and it gets worse, which makes me worry more, etc...
Sorry, I can't be of any help. I've never had that issue, before or after pregnancy.
Several people i run with have suffered from "brown shorts syndrome" (gross, I know); but I've never had any GI issues.
I don't take Gatorade though; I use Ultima instead.
Sorry I can't offer any suggestions...but GL! I hope your doctor can figure it out!
