At our 2 year old check up the doctor told us that during meals she should be able to have a kid cup. I like the take and toss cups b/c they are light. I also don't fill them more than a quarter full at a time just in case of spills. My DD still has sippy cups during the day just to prevent messes.

We love the Ikea kids cups. They're inexpensive, perfect size for kids hands, and colorful. Our oldest used a sippy cup for a long time, but DS switched pretty early (before 18 months maybe?) because he wanted to be like big sister.

I love nalgene. They have wide mouths and are easy to clean in the dishwasher. As long as you push the valve in they don't leak, really they don't. I have had the same 6 cups for DD for 3 years. I bought a few more with DS. I tried some other brands when DD was little and for DS, all had a short life span, like the take n toss and nuby. They are also hard spout, which is better for teeth.
I honestly can't remember when DD transitioned; I think by 2 she was reliably using regular cups. I have a set of Munchkin colored plastic cups and they are a great size for toddlers.
My daughter isn't 2 yet. We started with an open cup during meals a little over a month ago. She rarely spills now. The cups I have I bought in Germany before we moved. They are kind of like the bright Ikea kids cups. We also have some take and toss ones that I give her without a lid.
We did it awhile ago - maybe a little before her 2nd birthday. We just bought a bunch of the munchkin color cups from Target. We normally fill them about 1/3 full for meals. She still uses a sippy cup in the car or early in the mornings when she's just wandering around. She likes to "hold" the cup for me when I pour milk and she also likes to clear her plate and cup when she's done eating - LOL
At 12 months they got shot glasses with meals/snacks. For water throughout the day, take and toss sippies. Around 15/16 months I got cheap glasses from walmart- they are glass but good size for little hands. That was at least 4 months ago and we've only broken 2!

Yup, Munchkins are great. BPA free, dishwasher safe, cheap come in packs of 5 I think. DD just got some last week and loves them.
