S/O college...do you use your degree?

I have a BS in Human Development and a Masters in School Counseling.  I have yet to find a job as a school counselor and some days I could just kick myself for spending all that money to get my Masters.  I hate writing out my student loan checks!  And with the way they are cutting positions in NY right now, it's likely that I may never get a job in my field.

I'm still in a counseling position, just working with developmentally disabled adults instead of high school students.  So I guess it wasn't a total waste.

Re: S/O college...do you use your degree?

  • Hahahaha, I have three college degrees and a ton of student loans that I pay every month and am unemployed.  So no, I don't use my degree.  But not much I can do right now.

  • Nope!

BA in English/Secondary Ed. from Univ. of Illinois Champaign/Urbana

MA in Educational Policy Studies from U of I also

After a few years as a high school English teacher, now I work for myself in a completely unrelated field. But I would never consider my time at school a waste. I loved going and wish I could keep going. I also met my husband in college. And it's shaped who I am today.

  • I am always interested in the responses to this topic...

Like you OP, I also have my masters in School Counseling in the state of NY. I also have yet to find a position in our field and don't have much hope for the near future. Luckily I was able to find something similar (I do high school college/career counseling for a local university and am actually stationed in a local high school to do so), but still no official SC title.

At this point I am seriously considering becoming a SAHM, because I am just so frustrated with everything career related.

  • Thanks for reminding me....

No, I don't. I have two separate bachelor's degrees -- a BS in Sport Science (Exercise Physiology) and a BS in Nursing. I started my first nursing job at 32 weeks pregnant and resigned to SAH after DS was born. I was planning on going back to work after we move in May, but then I got my BFP....so it'll probably be this time next year that I finally go back to work.

  • Yep- BA in English, MA in Education, and I'm an English teacher, so there you go.

If I had time, I'd like to get a degree (or two) in some different fields like anthropology, maybe art, or science. What can I say, I like school.

  • yup.  BSN

    This!

I have a BS in biology and had intentions of going to med school. Once I started working in the medical field as an undergrad- I hated it!

So now I'm a financial aid couselor (I know you hate me by association) just to pay bills... for now.

  • I have a bunch of random degrees- I love school! I have a degree in Equine Sciences, Hospitality, Business Management, Real Estate and Accounting. I run a property management company, so I am using a couple of those. Now I am thinking about becoming a part-time SAHM; I would love to spend all of my time with my family and horses.

  • Bachelor's in Accounting - Yes I use. I had a minor in Mathematics that was a couple credits away from a double major - Use whenever I teach college algebra PT.

Masters in Business Admin - Eh. I guess I sort of use. I am an accountant for a hospital. Our CFO has one. It sounded like a good idea at the time. :)

  • I do--I have an undergrad business degree, a law degree, and a master's in tax.  For the last year, I was running a legal assistance program that provided free help to entrepreneurs regarding business law topics.  In January, I got a promotion, and we rolled my old program into my new department--so now I'm using my law degree more than the other two, but I still have my hands in the business law/tax world a bit.

  • I got a BS in Biology and a Teaching Credential.  I'm teaching 8th grade science, which is physical science and not bio, but I use a lot of the stuff from the classes I had to take as a bio major (a full year of physics and 2+ years of chem)

  • I have a law degree and I am teaching kids with severe disabilities.  So NO.  Call it following your passion? :)  I can't complain with the summers off and am making equal or more than I would in disability law (which is what I did prior to teaching).  Still would like to go back into it one day... just not sure.  Looking for PT!!!
