Will my body go back to normal after delivery??

I'm 15 weeks and I'm already at the point where my bras haven't fit for a month and just this week I noticed that my underwear isn't fitting either! I had no idea that my body was going to change so quickly and in so many places. I thought that until the very end I'd just have a cute baby bump... I'm so scared that my body won't go back to normal after delivery. Any moms out there who were able to get back into their pre-pregnancy clothes after having the baby?

Re: Will my body go back to normal after delivery??

  • Yes, I fit in my pre-pg clothing after about 8 months (I also gained 65 lbs, and DS was in and out of the hospital a lot which didn't grant much exercise time).

But, my body is nowhere near what it used to be.  It's very possible, but it takes much more dedication and time than I have.  I was happy with my pp body, but it was not like my pre-pg body.

  • It really varies from person to person. Some women drop the weight off just like that, especially if they BF. Me personally, I had to get on WW to lose the rest of the baby weight.

Honestly, my body will probably never be "the same", but I at least went back to my normal size!

  • I do not think its a realistic thought that the baby is going to pop out and you are going to fit right back into your pre preg jeans.. I wouldnt pack those jeans in your hospital bag. My thoughts are.. to set some short term and long term goals. Everyones pregnancy is different and everyones "recovery" is too. I am going to see how much I actually gain and try to lose half within 2-3 months and be back to where I was in 6. If I do not end up gaining too much then maybe I will be able to get in done in 3. I just have no idea because this is my first. Good luck and dont be too hard on yourself. Your body is doing an amazing thing and you shouldnt feel down about the changes its making. GL

  • With my first son I gained 25 pounds. My underwear always fit through my pregnancy. After giving birth the stomach looked all deflated and funny. A month after having my son I was fitting back into some of my jeans. Once I started exercising after my 6 week appointment I toned right back up. I was also nursing. I had no problems shedding the pounds and going back to the way I was. Hoping that it will be that easy this time around.
  • Honestly... No. You'll lose the weight and all, and you'll look the same with your clothes on, but your body will definitely never be "the same" again. Pregnancy and breastfeeding take a toll.

  • I went back to my pre pregnancy weight with both of my previous pregnancies very quickly.  I also BF.  My sister was not so lucky. She kept about 10 lbs in each of her 3 pregnancies.  She also BF.

So varies greatly from woman to woman but is possible.

  • After my first pregnancy things went back to pre-pregnancy size.  However, things were shaped differently and many of my pre-pregnancy clothes no longer worked.   After my second pregnancy things got close to normal, but I had 5 lbs that lingered and didn't drop before getting pregnant again.  We'll see what happens after #3.

This. I dropped all but five pounds of my pregnancy weight the first time in a matter of a month or a little less.

I could've done the rest, but I was so stressed out emotionally from my stillbirth, I just let my body do it's thing and didn't push the last 5 pounds. Then I ended up pregnant again anyways.

My regular clothes fit, but not right. My body is fine but it's just shaped differently.

It will be different but it won't be bad at all.

  • Yes, I fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans by the time my daughter was 1.  I was still EP up until that point.  My boobs went back to teenage size and I had to buy new bras a few months after that.  I never really exercised, we just take a lot of walks.  I felt like my body was never going to go back to normal.  I still feel a little wider in my hips and thighs though, but I fit back into those size 2's!

  • I haven't been through it yet either, but my in Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy book, she says 9 months of weight gain before baby, 9 months of weight loss after.
  • Depends on your definition of "normal." Stick out tongue I was in my pre-pregnancy clothes a week after DS was born, but there are definitely still differences in my body. Keep in mind that you're not getting wider just because of putting on weight, but it's also because your bones are actually moving and widening. Those will go mostly back in a few months. Also, I've heard that the extra weight we get on our thighs is specifically fat stores for breastfeeding. So that will take care of that if you decide to breastfeed....Of course BFing has its own body-changing effects Smile.
  • I lost all my weight except for 5 pounds when DD was about 8 months old. I was back in my regular clothes by the time she was about 6 months old but my body like other have said was shaped different. Some of my clothes didn't fit me right. I could get them on by they didn't look good. My stomach was not what it was before either. Then I got KU again so I don't know if I would have been totally back to the norm or not. We will find out after this one is born. But I did feel wider in my hip area than I did pre pregnancy.

  • Yes!  I was in my pre-preg clothes very soon after.  I gained about 30 lbs, and started regular walks one to two weeks after delivery.  After 6 weeks, I started back on my regular routines - gym classes, running, etc.

I trained to do a 1/2 marathon as a way to get in shape and during DS's naps (or while my hubby was home) would run on the treadmill 3-4 times a week.

For me my boobs weren't really affected because unfortunately my milk never came in.

My body isn't exactly the same but it's pretty close.  Clothes could fit differently too.

  • Mine was actually better.... though I gained 42 lbs with my DD, I lost it all and 10 lbs more. Working full time and BF I was just burning everything I was taking in.

Currently I am at the weight I was at when I got pregnant with my DD and I am now 21 weeks pregnant.

Hoping for a similar experience this time around but every pregnancy is different!!

  • A year after I had my son I was 15 pounds lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight. However, my body was different than it was before. My boobs were smaller and my hips were wider and I was able to get my belly flat-just not as toned. I was able to rock the bikini again haha.

  • Umm, my hips got bigger and never went back down, my body became fuller, but healthy and I like it. I was 115 lbs when I got pregnant with my DS and ended up at 165 lbs when I had him!! The least I've weighed since then was 135 lbs, which according to the BMI chart is healthy.
  • With my first, my body went fully back to normal, with the exception of some stretch marks and the whole vagina thing - everything but the external goes back to normal there :P

I breastfed for 14 months and my breasts are how they always were before the pregnancy. Stomach was nice and flat at 3 weeks post partum. Mind you, I was 21 then. I highly doubt I'll be so lucky with this one (now 26).

  • That depends, on genetics and other things like your diet and exercise. I see you're from South Florida, we live part time in Los Angeles so looking great in a bathing suit is a must, not just with your clothes on. Honestly, I gained 22 pounds with my first, and could get into my 'fat' jeans 2 weeks after giving birth (uncomfortably though). I did EBF for 14 months and all the pregnancy weight was gone by 4-5 months but yes, the once perky boobs will have to have a face lift sometime in the future after I'm done having kids. I was lucky, no stretchmarks either. Just eat healthy and pace yourself, you'll be able to get back in your clothes. GL!
  • my breasts look exactly the same as before DD.  They're full, perky for 36 years old.

    My butt is also fine.

My stomache was never great and is worse now.   I will never, ever wear a bikini again.  no stretchmarks, but the skin is loose and shakey.

  • my answer: NO..

I dropped all my weighty plus 5 lbs, but is my body the same, HELL NO!!

my boobs have dropped, my hips are wider, i have stretch marks now and this very weird tummy flab! UGH!!

  • YES! My body was the same after having DD.  4 months later I was in a 2 piece bathing suit at the beach. Nursing is the BEST thing to do to get your body back. I ate whatever I wanted and often. I didn't really exercise either. ( I''m not normally the kind of person that can eat whatever I want and not gain a pound so after BF was done I had to get to work)
  • I'm starting to freak out too b/c I feel huge and I'm only 14 wks!  I'm definitely bigger (now and PP) than I was 4 years ago w/ #1.  With my first I lost 30 out of the 40 lbs I gained in the first 6 weeks (no exercise and no BF) and was back in PP clothes, so it's definitely possible.  Hoping I lose it that fast w/ this one too!

    agreed 100%

  • You can lose all the weight you want but you will never have a pre-pregnancy body again.

  • At 5 months PP I had lost all my pregnancy weight (which was +32lbs!). By 6 months PP I was below my pre-pg weight. I still wear all my regular clothes from before I even got pregnant with DS. I must add that I busted my ass off until my due date, going to the gym 3 days a week and eating healthy (but I am not one to like processed food anyway). I got my flat stomach back, and everything else. Can't speak for the boobs though, since I weaned DS 2 days before getting this BFP. Those sure won't be as perky as they were before I had him...
