Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When to start potty training?

My daughter is 17 months and everytime she goes pee she grabs at her diaper to let us know and/or goes to grab a diaper for a change. Is this a sign that we should get a portable potty out for her so that she can possibly start using it?

I don't want to push the issue at all, but if she's showing signs I thought it couldn't hurt to start. As a first time mom though I don't know when is a good age to start potty training. What have you guys done as far as the potty training? What are your thoughts? Is 17 months too early to expect anything?

Thanks for your thoughts :)

Re: When to start potty training?

  • I'm wondering this too.  DD used to tell me after she pooped but lately she is saying "I poop" and then going..so she is aware that she needs to go to the bathroom and letting me know.  I figured it wouldn't hurt to get her familiar with a little potty but I don't want to push the issue at all.  My sister's DD also showed interest early and if she tells her she has to go or wants to use the potty my sister lets her but she hasn't forced it on her since she is just turning 2.  My mom said when we were kids she used to sit us on the toilet and read us a book..that way we got familiar with it and most of the time we would be so focused on the book that we would end up letting a little pee out anyway, and then she would make a big deal over it.  DD hasn't shown any awareness of when she pees, but if I can get her to poop on the potty I guess it won't hurt.

I think it's different for every child. I'm not looking forward to it, because I hear it's harder for boys than girls... for some reason. My friend (who now has a 3 year old) started her DD just before her 2nd birthday (it's still a work in progress).

  • We PT DS when he was 17 months old- we did daytime, naps and nightime.  It was VERY easy!  At 14 month he would tell us when he had to poop and always followed us into the bathroom.  I was pregnant at the time so we held off PT until the baby was born and we were on leave.  It was really easy for us- we went straight to underwear (we used CD so for us pullups were pointless).  We just set a timer and took him when it went off.  Each day we extended the time.  By day 5 we ditched the timer as he was telling us.  Its been a year now without issues.  My longest LO is now 12 months and whenever she poops she comes to us right away.  I think I'll wait about 2 more months and then start with her.  In my opinion the best time to PT is 17months- 22 months.  Its something new and fun and you get them before everything is "no".
  • When DS was 16 months he started wanting to sit on the toilet, so I bought a little seat for the toilet and a portable potty too. He uses one or the other about 3x a day. I don't push, he just goes to the bathroom when he wants to use it. I would start PT right now, but want to wait till summer when I'm home everyday. If your LO is showing signs of being ready, go for it!
