refresh my memory: sales tax and breast pumps

i thought i recalled that breast pumps were exempt from sales tax but i'm having a hard time finding documentation about that online. is that true?

  • I think that's correct, because they're a medical device. You may have more luck searching for something like "medical device and sales tax."

  • I know you can now use your flex spending for it, therefore tax free in that regard.  Also, I know that my hospital sells them tax free, as was told to me at a recent baby class.  They sell the pump in style but not the freestyle if you're interested.
  • I'm not sure if it's still the case - but, it was 2 years ago.

    I was so ticked, b/c Great Beginnings charged me tax.  I went round and round with them (including the manager), showing them the law and everything, and they wouldn't refund the tax.  I finally turned them in to the State of MD Dept of Taxation. 

  • In the state of MD they are tax exempt.  The LC at the hospital I delivered at always vented to us that Great Beginnings was charging tax and how really her operation is more of a service (non profit) vs them.
