When did you introduce a paci to your preemie? I've read about them being introduced early to help with the sucking reflex. I've also read that it's not a good idea...confusing!
Personal experiences please

Kevin was first given a pacifier at about 3 1/2 weeks old - he was exactly 30 weeks gestation. He wasn't really interested in it but the nurses would give it to him a couple times a day and evenutally he caught on.
My LO was given one from the start (born at 31 weeks). I tried to limit it to when he was getting his gavage feeds so he could learrn the association between the sucking and eating, but im sure he was given it many other times when i wasnt around.
Mine were given the pacifier from the start(32w 6d), but for limited time at the beginning. They gradually built up the time they had it. DD would only take it if it had the sugar soothe water. Haha.

DD was given one just before we were discharged but we were over-using it at first- she was a major oral soother and once she (and DH and I) understood the difference between sucking for nutrition and sucking for comfort things got a lot better. She had a soother until 8 months adjusted or so (I can never remember when we took it away) but we weaned without incident.
I think the nurses gave them both a pacifier shortly after they were in the NICU. When I saw them for the first time the day after they were born, they both had one.

DD was given a pacifier in the NICU her second day of life. I remember going down to see her for the first time and she had this big preemie paci in her mouth. Now at almost 18 months I would love to break her of it. We are trying at least.
DD was given one right away (even though I honestly never wanted it introduced). She was born at 34 weeks, though. Now we have a binki addict who I'm not looking forward to weaning. She did fine with breast/bottle/paci without too much confusion, though.

My peanut got his first teeny tiny micro preemie pacifier in his first week of life. He loved that thing. It didn't seem to bother him that he was sucking on both the pacifier and the ventilator tube at the same time. Actually when his pacifier would fall out he would just suck on the tube until we replaced the paci. I think using a pacifier really helped develop his sucking reflex and helped soothe him. Despite being on the vent for 8 weeks and cpap for 3, he never had a problem when he started bottle feeding. In fact he was a rockstar.

The NICU gave it to her on day 1 or 2 and she was 33w5d.
She always took bottles and it took her 2-3 weeks to really get the hang of bfing, but that had nothing to do with the paci. By 2 months old, she started refusing the bottles and pacis and even now she only wants the boob. She doesn't even take a sippy, just drinks right from a regular cup.
There's really no way to tell if it's going to be confusing or not. I always thought that they were given to preemies to help them learn how to suck.

They were giving my son pacifier really early in NICU stay. I have pictures from week 2 I believe. He never took to paci once we got home, but was dependent on it in his NICU days.

Re: Preemies & Pacifiers
It seems like the girls had them from the beginning but maybe I am wrong!
OP! Where in Bham are you? My girls were at UAB!

We noticed a paci in her isolette on day 2.
