I love Aflac! (Long)

If you are planning to TTC in the near future you might want to consider signing up for Aflac of a similar supplemental insurance before you get pregnant. I just received my Aflac claim payments yesterday and was very impressed.

Knowing that we were planning on TTC in May of last year I signed up for Aflacs Hospital confinement Indemnity policy (with an additional admissions benefit) ,  Hospital Confinement sickness Indemnity policy (with an additional admissions benefit), and the Short term disability policy. Aflac requires that you have the policy in force for 10 months before deliver is covered so I signed up starting April 1, 2010. From April 1, 2010 through now I have paid $1782.00 in premiums and I received my pay out yesterday for $6315.00 for my hospital stay and delivery. In addition to this we will have additional unexpected  $3000 coming in from LO?s extended hospital stay.

A portion of my claim and premiums are for Short-term disability and you can only get this coverage if your employer offers Aflac for its employees. However I believe that anyone can sign up for the hospital confinement policies independently. In addition to the standard benefits that I received if you are at high risk for pre-term delivery or a multiple pregnancy you may want to consider the Intensive/critical care policy that Aflac offers because it covers a babies NICU stay.

I apologize if I sound like an Aflac add; I am just thourally impressed by this and wanted to pass it along to anyone else that might benefit from it. I am really happy that I found out about the coverage options before we decided to TTC, it allowed me to take a longer maternity leave then I normally would have.

  • I don't have AFLAC for this pregnancy, I wish I did though!  But we've used them in the past and they've been awesome in their supplemental coverage - DH broke his back several years ago (not as serious as it sounds sometimes!) and they covered all co-pays and then some, I feel ashamed to say be we MADE money with his injury (we paid premiums but ultimately we came out WAY ahead!)

  • I appreciate you sharing. We talked to Aflac, and you are correct you cannot get Short Term Disability interdependently; you have to go through your employer. That was a total bummer for me as I work for a company with 3 employees, and we would all have to sign up. I'm pretty sure our 21 year old part time delivery driver doesn't want disability insurance.

I appreciate hearing about the other though.  DH and I were unsure if it would be worth it or not.

I?m happy to share if it can help someone else out. Honestly the other policies pay much better benefits in relationship to the premiums then the STD policy. The STD policy is a great added benefit and if you have any complications that require you to be on bed rest it would be priceless; however for a "normal" pregnancy and delivery the STD policy only pays out for 5 weeks (you have at least a 1 week waiting period depending on your policy). It will pay 7 weeks for a c-section. If you do decide to do one of the other policies  you would want to make sure to add the additional riders to increase your initial hospital admission benefits to the maximum amount because that is really what makes the policy worth it.

  • They also have a great cancer policy. No one can ever predict that they will have cancer but if you have the extra ins. through Aflac it is a similar payout (that you can use it as needed.)
