those who have potty-trained

any tips??  I think DD is ready, but I am terrified. Smile  I am mostly scared of going out in public with her not in diapers!  She is currently on an antibiotic for a double ear infection and as always, the antibiotic is messing with her digestive system.  As soon as she is over this, I am going to stop using diapers.  Any tips/advice are GREATLY appreciated. Any recommendations for a travel potty seat?  Our bathroom is too small to have a potty chair so we currently have a small step stool and potty seat on our toilet.  But I would like to have something for when we go out.  TIA!

  • My best advice is to skip Pull-Ups. DD treated them like diapers but she can feel the difference between diapers and underwear. Once she "got" that underwear wasn't for going in, we never had problems. She has occasional accidents, but rarely.

  • Ditto what teacherjess said.  Also I wouldn't put her in underwear for going out in public until she is consistently staying dry at home.  I didn't put Ava in underwear for going out in public right away... it was probably another month or so before I was brave enough to do that, but until we did we still used diapers for going out and it didn't seem to disturb the progress she was making at home.  Once we did start going out in public with underwear on, it wasn't a race to get to the bathroom or anything.  She was able to hold it for a few minutes if we couldn't get to it right away.  In the car, we have a "piddle pad" (made by Kiddopotamus) in her car seat just in case but she's only had a couple of accidents ever, and I remember that one of them was only b/c we had a long car ride and she fell asleep.

  • I completely agree about skipping pull ups. We stayed home for a few days to get the hang of things and find her rhythm. After about 4 days we could go out for brief trips. After about 6 days she had no accidents out of the house at all. Potty training was exhausting and we hit a rough spot when she got sick about 2 and a half weeks in. But we just stuck with it and after 3 weeks she was great.
