Special Needs

Dismissed from special education services

My son was exited from special education services this am. He tests in the average/high average range in all areas! This was his 3 year evaluation. Wow! We are so proud of him - he has worked very hard and all the service providers had nothing but positives to say about him.

Now we face a difficult decision:

A. Trevor stays put in his current restrictive setting in a school across the city. He will be mainstreamed half day in a montessori classroom (this is what is offered for typical students at the school). He would not receive direct services, but would be included in the group services offered. He would transition to our neighborhood school in September.

B. We transition Trevor to our neighborhood school after April break. This would allow his to make some friends in the school he will be attending through 5th grade. We would hopefully be able to hand pick his teachers for k and 1st grade. This would be a huge change, but I can see the benefit of transitioning him before the end of the school year.

The 2nd option really threw me. My original thought was to keep him where he is because the teacher is excellent and the classroom only has 12 students, but I would also like to see how Trevor will transition into a class of 20+ students with NO supports in place. I am anxious and excited. Looking for input.

Re: Dismissed from special education services

  • Congratulations! That's wonderful that his progress has been so great :)

What's your gut say about how he'll handle the change? I think so much of it will be based on his personality. Socially he may either like having the rest of the year to process/say good bye or he may like a chance to essentially try out the new school, knowing that there is a summer break coming soon. Personally I kind of like the idea of #2 because if he has any trouble adjusting you'll have time to work on that over the summer (anything from playdates to help him get to know classmates to just time for him to mentally prepare himself for the new school layout/ teachers/etc).
