Florida Babies

Baby+beach=question :)

We've taken our LO to the beach a few times, but usually just like "we're eating dinner at this beach restaurant and we'll dip your toes in the water after we walk in the sand." Today I went to the beach with two friends and their 13-month-olds, and I started to realize I either need to avoid the beach for the next 5-8 years or ask for some tips on how to beach with a baby. My big thing is the sand - how do I handle sand everywhere, especially when it is on their hands, they rub their eyes, etc.? Do you arm yourself with a bottle of water and washcloth? Use some sort of magical shield? And any tips for minimizing the eating of shells and other stuff found in the sand? TIA! :)

Re: Baby+beach=question :)

  • haha.. my daughter is 13 months old. I brought her to the beach last week for our first real "beach" day like you said. What a disaster! There is still sand in her hair! She had a blast, we got her naked and showered her off before we left but I don't think it did much good and she did not like the shower part of things one bit. I think you just have to know that if you go to the beach, things are going to get dirty!! Good luck.

  • Baby powder will take the sand off. Everything else just comes with the territory. Wink

Also, my dermatologist recommends using Sun Block and not sunscreen. Something like Neutrogena Pure and Free for babies or something like that. Basically you want something with a Zinc Oxiode base. Have fun!

  • another tip i got from other moms who have girls is to watch how much sand gets in their swim diapers because the sand can create uti's. not to make you worry. just keep rinsing your lo's tush.
