Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Can LO roll and suffocate while swaddled?

LO is 4 months and we just started swaddling to help him stay asleep.  After he fell alsleep I went in to check him and he managed to roll partially on his side. I am afraid if he continues through the roll and ends up on his belly while swaddled, his face will be smooshed into the mattress and he will be stuck and not be able to breathe.

He has great head and neck control and has plenty of tummy time and all.

Should I be worried?

He is finally sleeping well, and now I am worried about him suffocating face down.

Edit:   LO can roll over when front to back and back to front.

  • I suppose it's possible, but if he's strong enough to be rolling while swaddled, I'm sure he'd be able to move his head to the side to breath if he landed face down.

Have you considered not swaddling anymore? We didn't swaddle after the hospital since DS hated it, so I don't know when people usually stop.

We just started swaddling 2 nights ago because LO has never been a good sleeper, ever.  He wakes every 45 minuetes all night long. Some nights he does better, but mostly it is just awful.  People suggested we start swaddling him to help him sleep. it seems to be working.

This is when you stop swaddling.  Maybe try swaddling with arms out?
