Repost: Car Seat Questions

I am a newbie and have no clue about a lot of things. A friend of mine just gave me a  stroller,so I was wondering if all types of car seats can fit into the stroller? I was planning on getting a travel system so mix matching has never been something I thought about. And we also got a car seat base from her, will any car seat fit the base?

Sorry, I'm totally clueless about all this!

TIA!

Re: Repost: Car Seat Questions

  • What's the make and model of the seat?  Some convertible car seats can be used for newborns but they usually fit better in an infant seat, making them safer.  You should look on the seat to see what the expiration date is and check online for recalls.  Did she tell you if the seat had ever been in an accident?

That type of car seat isn't stroller compatible.  It's infant seats that are used with strollers.  What kind of stroller is it?  You should be able to look online and see what infant seats you can use with it and if you need some kind of adapter.  I would also check for recalls on the stroller.

No, you can't use any car seat with the base.  Did she give you manuals for everything?  It's extremely important to have the manual so the car seat can be installed and used correctly.  You'll have to look for that online too.  This is why I'm not a big fan of used baby gear.

ETA:  Make sure that car seat is not a booster seat.  They definitely cannot be used for newborns.

Yeah I'm trying to be as economical as possible but I'm starting to think I may have to get these from a retailer. The car seat is actually a booster seat, I was reading the info on the stickers and it expires after this yr. so I'm going to toss it. And the stroller is a Graco. She didn't give me a manual for anything. I don't know how to find the type of stroller it is besides knowing it's a Graco. And I'm pretty sure the car seat base is too big, so I think I may toss that also.

  • You need to check the same things on the car seat base: expiration date, recalls, if it's been in an accident, find a manual online, etc.  It's also brand and model specific as far as what infant seat you can use with it.  If you buy a new infant seat it will include a base so you won't need that one.  I really wouldn't advise using it anyway.

Yeah I think I'm going to toss both the car seat base and the booster seat. I just would like to keep the stroller and get a car seat to go with it, if I can. Anything I can do to save money.

That would probably be best.  I know things can be tight and there is a lot of stuff to buy but you really shouldn't cut corners with things that have a big impact on baby's safety.  You should look into the book Baby Bargains.  They give reviews for all kinds of baby items and give recommendations based on budget too.

Make sure you destroy the base and the booster before throwing them out. Otherwise, someone will surely find them and use them.

If it is a Graco Stroller, then you can call Graco and give them the model #, etc. My Graco stroller had a sticker under the foot rest area that had all the info on it. If you can post a picture, I am sure that we can tell you what model it is.

  • So I just found the model number, it's a Graco Stroller. 7479ctc

When I google it I can only find a Graco car seat. A friend of mine said that she found where it was manufactured in July of 02, surely it's expired by now right?

    Help!

  • definitely expired by now...

also, if the stroller is that old also, you may have a hard time finding an infant seat to fit in it.

the designs of these things change every time a new model is made. a newer infant seat may plop onto the stroller just fine, but it might not lock and it could fall off the stroller

if anything get a new infant seat, and a snap and go, and keep the stroller for later

  • I would keep the booster and extra base..BRU does a turn in of old gear and gives you a 20% on new gear coupon. The usually are also running gear sales then so turns out to be a good deal.... If you are trying to save money

Trade in sale is for 25% off, even better.  That ended fairly recently though so they probably won't have another one for a while.  Maybe late Summer/early Fall.

If you do get rid of the car seat stuff, destroy them like a PP said.  Cut and remove the straps on the booster and remove or destroy the cover and padding.  Write 'Not Safe For Use' in permanent marker on the shell and the infant seat base.  Bag it so someone driving by doesn't see it just sitting there.  It sounds like a lot but you might help save a child's life.

  • The stroller will fit any graco infant seat, it doesn't matter how old the stroller is.

Exactly this - the older strollers will still fit the newer seats.

Destroy the base, by the time a new trade in sale comes around, you will have either bought one or found out you don't need it (we purchased a second base, only to find we didn't need it!).  Hang on to the booster, since you won't need that for years to come - you can trade that in even years from now.
