Question1: RDI vs. Floortime vs. Hanen. Does anyone have any experience/opinions on these? Especially if you've done more than one of them?
We will more than likely do a Hanen/More Than Words parent training program, but it doesn't start until August. There's a woman within a five-minute drive who does RDI. I have no idea yet what's available locally to help us get more than book-knowledge of Floortime -- some professional coaching & feedback would be really helpful.
I'm researching to figure out whether there are profound differences among them, or if they are similar enough that it doesn't really matter which one we choose. They all seem to be parent-focused, emphasizing social/emotional development, and hopefully will be a way for DH and I (mostly me) to take the lead on incorporating therapy day to day. Any first-hand experiences would be great to hear!
Question 2: Is there a minimum # of hours of ABA that are considered effective? How many hours did you start with and/or progress to, especially if you paid OOP?
The ABA has us most concerned at this point, b/c unless DH's company makes an exception for us (which his HR rep has hinted at but I think is a very, very, very long shot), we'll be paying OOP. I've been told that people start at four hours a week and bump up, or start at 10 hours/week.
I'm really worried that at between $85-$125 per hour (which are the prices I've seen or been quoted so far), we're just not going to be able to afford enough hours to make a difference. There is a state children-with-autism waiver, but it's only for 75 kids at a time and the wait list is 2.5 years.
It is incredibly frustrating to know that if DH were working for a company with private insurance, this would be mandated coverage under state law.
Re: ASD folks: some questions on therapies
Ditto everything Auntie said. Want to stress that you will probably need a combination of therapies based on your DD needs today. This will change over time, but you have to address her immediate needs first.
So, throw in the mix: Speech, OT, PT (if needed), diet, biomed, Tomatis and other less mainstream therapies that you will have to learn about.
Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions!
