Little milk to go around

I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble with their breast milk? Seems like I didn't get the "engorgement" or tons of breast milk like people warned me about. I have to supplement with formula so baby has enough to eat. When I pump I usually get 2-3 ounces total. The little guy doesn't have a problem latching.

Re: Little milk to go around

  • The more you let him suckle [even if nothing is coming out] the more you'll produce. By week 5 I was producing enough to EBF. It just takes a while for some of us. Good luck :)

ETA: Fenugreek supplements seemed to really help, too.

  • I was exactly the same way with my part of it but my DS seemed to get enough. I was and still am constantly worried I don't have enough milk but I guess it's good for him. He's 9 weeks now and I just went back to work and I'm still only pumpling 3-4 oz total. Does he seem like he's not getting enough or are you just worried, because he might be just fine.
  • i agree- i didnt get engorged either and thought he wasnt getting enough-just let him suck!  good luck

& if you are worried he is not getting enough you can always call the dr however like they told me,as long as he is not screaming and he is having dirty diapers there is no need to worry

  • I have done everything you can possibly imagine to increase my supply yet I can only give DD (2 months old) about 2 oz of breastmilk per feed (confirmed by before & after weighing from my lactation consultant and also by pumping) so I've been supplementing with 1-2 oz of formula for a while. She latched great from the start (still does) but she had a lot of trouble gaining weight her first 3 weeks so once we figured out I have low supply we had to give formula too. For almost all women more BFing increases their supply... this did not happen for me, no clue why. We nursed round the clock every 1-2 hours for a several weeks and no increase. She was crying after some feeds but I thought she was just fussy. Tried Fenugreek, Reglan, and lots of other things... just keep an eye on your LO's weight. That's the main indicator of how your milk supply is doing. I'm still BFing then supplementing after every feed because I didn't want to give up BFing just because I don't have quite enough. Stick with it and trust your instincts!!
  • I get the same amount. She eats 3oz per feeding, so I'm able to pump just enough to keep up with her. I wish I could pump more than she needed so I could have a good supply for when I go back to work, but it's just not happening. This is with fenugreek too. Before I started taking it, I was getting maybe 1-1.5oz, and if I was really lucky, I would get 2. Now I pretty consistently get 2-3.

  • I've heard that sometimes it can take a long time for the milk to really come in. My friend had that problem. Also, make sure you don't have a clogged duct or mastisis or anything. Hopefully you don't since you didn't experience engorgment, but I my right breast wasn't producing as much as my left, and because I wasn't paying attention I'm not paying for it with clogged ducts that won't go away (looks like I have to get it excised :( )

This was me and I made it to 5 weeks only giving my baby 50% of what he needed at each feeding in breast milk. I still wanted to give him what I could. Fenugreek and Blessed thistle together - 3 of each pill 3 times a day did increase my supply. Good luck. But 2 -3 oz at the age your baby is now was way more than I was producing at that time. The most I ever had was 2 oz, every 3 hours.
