We are leaning towards Catherine Marie for our daughter. Both are family names. We want to call her Katie, but it is weird to have a nickname start with a different letter...yes? We could spell it Catie or Caty. Both look weird to me. Any advice?
I know a few Catherine's that go by Katie. You could name her Katherine if you think it's weird. I think both spellings are fairly accepted. I prefer Catherine, but I don't see a huge difference.
I am a Catherine/nn Katie and while it's not uncommon, I've always hated it. If I ever want my initials on something, I never know what to get since everyone calls me Katie but my true initial is a C. Also, you know how there's that automatic drop down menu on work emails? Well, people who only know me as Katie can never find my email address since it starts with an entirely different letter. Also, people who do know my formal name are always spelling my nn Catie (ugh - that is so ugly to me). If I could go back in time and whisper in my parents' ears, I'd tell them to spell my formal name Katherine so I'd have Ks across the board. Just my two cents. . . but yay for a pretty classic name and nickname!
My SIL (and the relative for whom she was named) is a Catherine who goes by Katy.
It actually surprised me a lot when I found out; I didn't know that was something people did. I think it's less confusing to use a C spelling, but I agree that they look odd.
Apparently, it's a perfectly normal choice to go Kate, Katy, or Katie with the formal name Catherine. If it's what you prefer, go for it.

I would definitely use Catie or Caty. Changing the first letter will just be confusing. Of the two, I like Catie better but my first choice would be nn Cate. I just think Cate is so classy.

Oscar born October 2011
Miscarriage at 8 weeks (August 2013)

DD's name is Catherine, and we sometimes call her Cate.
I DO think it's a "little" strange to change the first letter, but if the British can do it, I guess we can too.

Really good points. Never thought of those.
