What age did you start time outs?

the post about spanking got me wondering what age you started to use time outs?

Re: What age did you start time outs?

  • I just started (well, I used in once and sitter once).  I only do a minute.  However, over the weekend, I said to dd "do you want to go to timeout" she said "yes." I think I shouldn't be asking :)

  • I gave DS his first time out about 2 weeks ago (so 22 months). He was mad at me because I wouldn't start a fire in our fireplace so he hit me in the leg with the fireplace shovel. I sat him in a chair and told him sterly that you don't hit when you are mad and that he needed to sit and chill out. He cried and I turned my back on him. He tried to get up once and I sat him back down and told him to stay there. I left him there about a minute before I picked him back up.

He got another time out a week ago for biting me on the leg. After both time outs, he hasn't repeated either behavior yet so I am hoping it did some good.

He is almost 2 so he can understand the difference between right and wrong.

  • I'm not sure we will.

I just read Unconditional Parenting and it sort of blew my mind... now I'm all sorts of confused, and questioning everything....

  • I've tried twice in the last few months.  We do other things before time out because I don't think he gets it.  A friend was over with their little girl and she got put in time out (she's 4 mo older).  A few days later we did it and it worked.

The next time we did it, it didn't work because it had been almost a month.  DS won't sit in one spot and he really just doesn't understand why we're making him do that.

I'll probably try again in a month or so and see if he "gets" it.

  • I had to do one the other day, I know dd is way to young to get it, but she was doing something that she knows is 100% wrong and not allowed, and when I told her no, she looked at me and did it again.

So, I picked her up and said "you know that is wrong, we do not do that" then I sat on the floor with her, away from the situation, and said that "we do not do that, and we do not go back and do it again, after mommy has told you no, now we will sit here and count to 30" I counted pretty quick, after that I let her go and she was fine and didn't go back to where I had removed her from.

  • We just started this week, so he's almost 19 months. So far I have to sit with him and keep him from getting up to play. About half way through he gets the point that it's not a game with mommy and starts to pout. Hopefully it will start to sink in soon though.

  • we are home visiting and i had to give dd her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd the other day. she would not stop laying on the dogs, pulling their ears or tail and pushing them.

i make her sit on my lap for one minute. she gets mad, but usually goes right back to what she was doing. i can give her a time out warning now though and she walks away.

mostly i just needed to give the doggies a break from torture!
