Grammer question

Editing for my stupid typos... the only change was I or me:)

___________

Which way do you say this...

Please join Joe and I for an evening of...

OR

Please join Joe and me for an evening of...

I am sure I knew the proper way back in undergrad or graduate school, but after being in business for 15+ years and hearing it both ways, I just forget...

What do you say?  What is proper?

Re: Grammer question

  • I'm confused.  Wouldn't it just be join?

    I've never heard of joing

  • Sorry, I was completely confused by the misspelling of join that I didn't read the rest.  My B

It would be please join "joe and me" because you would say please join me, not please join I

I've always learned that you use the tense you would use if you were just saying me/I not with another name

  • Disregarding the typos, it would be:

Please join Joe and Jane for an evening of...

You don't sign the invitation, so it's all in 3rd person.

    THIS

  • Isn't it spelled "grammar"?

  • I am confused as well though, why not just "join". Joing confuses me, and joint doesn't fit with the sentence.

Edited: completely confused by the question.

  • it would be "please join Joe and me"

you want to use whatever would make sense if you took out the "Joe and" part. You wouldn't say "please join I ". That's how I was taught to remember which to use.

  • This post is full of win.

  • I have a JD and a MBA and am the worst speller in the world.  I mis-spell everything and without spell check, I would be in a world of problems:)   I am posting from my mobile which leads to also incane typos as I have fat fingers.

I guess I am just a mess all around:) :)

This is not for an invitation.  I was just using an example.  This is more in a business setting.   I have received  emails recently ... that had the following in them, which is what prompted me to ask (as it appears there is a lot of confussion on the subject).  this is from customers, internal employees, friends, etc... so it is not like we just have a company of idiots:)

X and I are doing XXX.

Join X and I for a web chat.

    X and I will deliver.

    X and me will host.

Please invite X and I to the event.

Please include me and X in the distribution.

    Correct

    Correct.

    X and I will host.

As someone said earlier, just take out the "X and" part and see what sounds correct. And always list "X and" before I/me.

Who gives a fvck about an Oxford comma?
I've seen those English dramas too
    They're cruel
So if there's any other way
    To spell the word
It's fine with me, with me

Why would you speak to me that way
Especially when I always said that I
Haven't got the words for you
All your diction dripping with disdain
    Through the pain
    I always tell the truth

Vampire Weekend FTW!  Although, Sookie, this is now going to be in my head for the next 2 weeks.  TIA!

    Yes

I teach 3rd grade.  When I teach I vs. me, I always tell the kids to leave out the other person.

So I would say, Please join John and me because if I took out John, I would say "please join me".

    Hope that makes sense.
