Calling Charlotte, NC mom's!

We are looking into relocating to Charlotte- my sister lives there and told me that daycares are really expensive and there are really long waiting lists. Is this true?

Thanks!

Re: Calling Charlotte, NC mom's!

  • I didn't find that to be the case. The prices were competitive to what I've seen in other cities. As for waiting lists, that really depends on your part of town. I looked just outside of Charlotte and encountered either very short or no wait lists. A friend in Myers Park had a three month waiting list for her daycare of choice.

The NC local board is pretty active so you may get a wider range of responses over there. GL!

  • We have been on a waitlist in Charlotte metro for 8 months. Average monthly cost in the city is ~800-1200.
  • I just answered on the local board, but I pay $168/wk  for a 15 mo old. The wait lists vary, so I would get on one asap...also, church and home daycares are going to be your least expensive bet. We initially had to staart DS in a diff DC until we got into ours...not a big deal. We went to one that had just opened and got right in. Good luck!

  • The cheapest I've heard is $190/wk and at prenatal yoga I've heard $1100/mth for some of the "nicer" (read: in the rich neighborhoods) daycares.

I agree with pp that home daycare or churches will be a better bet and I'm sure the care may be a bit better too.

  • We are in Cornelius, about 10 miles north of the city.  When we first moved down here, the waiting list was about one year for our 6 month old.  Luckily a spot opened up in about 4 weeks (someone was offered a spot and declined it).  DD #2 was guaranteed a spot since her sister was already enrolled.

For the baby it is about $1050/month.  The 4 year old is about $900/month.

I think that is a HUGE generalization.  What would make an at home or church daycare any better than a center?
