SUMMER INSTITUTE ON DEAFBLINDNESS:

Communication Development and Instructional Strategies for Students with Deaf-blindness and/or Severe Disabilities Presenter: Dr. Linda Mamer University of British Columbia, Canada June 20-24, 2011 University of Maryland at College Park Sponsored by Connections Beyond Sight and Sound, The Maryland Project for Children who are Deafblind A collaborative project between Maryland State Department of Education and the University of Maryland Target Audience The Institute is designed to meet the needs of regular and special educators, family members, related service providers, administrators, teachers of the visually impaired, and teachers of the deaf/Hard-of-Hearing who work directly or indirectly with students with dual sensory impairments and/or severe disabilities. This course is also particularly appropriate for family members. Paraeducators are encouraged to attend, with priority given to those attending with another member of a student's educational team. Institute Focus This course covers instructional techniques used in the education of students who are deaf-blind, including tactile strategies, concept development, routine-based instruction, active learning and "Intervention". The development of communication and individualized communication systems is the central focus of the course. Topics include an overview of communication, receptive and expressive communication, augmentative communication and assistive technology, calendar systems, communicative functions of behavior, and specific forms and functions.   • I'd love to go back for this! They've actually had several things (Van Dykke!) that I've wanted to go to lately, but we can't leave DD with anyone because of her trach. :/
