Hernia. . .

So on mon morning I noticed a lump on the right side of DS's pubic region, I freaked out called my mom to have her come look at it and it was gone by the time she got here.  Well yesterday he had two diapers that were less wet than usual so I decided to look for the lump again and sure enough it was back, I noticed it at every diaper change yesterday.  Then when I was at my mom's and changing his diaper it was a bit larger so I remembered to have my mom come look.  While she was looking at it he started crying and it got bigger, thankfully this was all happening around 4:15 because the pediatrician's nurse line is open til 5.  So we decided that I should call the nurse and see what they thought, they told me to take him to urgent care because they were afraid it was possibly a hernia.  So we went to urgent care and sure enough they diagnosed it as a hernia, and told me to call for a surgery consult this morning.

I'm not super worried because I know that hernia's can be common in infants, but I wanted to share in case anyone else notices something similar.  Take care ladies!

  • Oh, poor little guy.

Do you know what causes hernias in babies?

  • Apparently this particular hernia is more common in boys but can happen to little girls as well.  There is a hole for the testes to descend through while your baby is developing and the hole is supposed to close either before delivery or shortly after I haven't perfectly figured that part out.  And this opening allows for some of the intestines to come through, creating the obvious hernia.  I know it isn't a perfect answer but it is what I've been told.

  • A clearer explanation

Indirect inguinal hernia. Indirect inguinal hernias are congenital hernias and are much more common in males than females because of the way males develop in the womb. In a male fetus, the spermatic cord and both testicles?starting from an intra-abdominal location?normally descend through the inguinal canal into the scrotum, the sac that holds the testicles. Sometimes the entrance of the inguinal canal at the inguinal ring does not close as it should just after birth, leaving a weakness in the abdominal wall. Fat or part of the small intestine slides through the weakness into the inguinal canal, causing a hernia. In females, an indirect inguinal hernia is caused by the female organs or the small intestine sliding into the groin through a weakness in the abdominal wall.

Indirect hernias are the most common type of inguinal hernia. Premature infants are especially at risk for indirect inguinal hernias because there is less time for the inguinal canal to close.
