Irrritated...jealous (Long)

So yesterday I had my 36 week appt. I was 36w and 2d. Well I knew I was going to have my group B test done yesterday. I was not worried about it just ready to get it over with. After all you girls saying when you had your 36w appt that they did a internal I was looking forward to this, I know some of you are against it but I am not and was looking forward to knowing if I had started any progress. Well after getting in the room I was left alone and told to strip down, waste down. I seriously sat there 35-40 min. I was heated! If I would have posted this yesterday like I was gonna I know it wouldn't be said as nicely as it is today. I was so mad/upset I seriously just wanted to cry. I almost got dressed again and left. I was tempted to open the door and ask can someone please come swab my A** so I can leave and get back to my job (I go to my appts. on my lunch hour). And to top it all off when she did come in the room she acted like everything was normal and said this should be quick and didn't even apologize for taking so long and leaving me sit there stark a** naked for 40 min, as most of them do when they take that long. My back was killing me from sitting up on the table and nothing to prop me up. Worst of all, she didn't even check me! GRRR!!!  I was already undressed and almost sure she was gonna. She was literally in the room maybe 7-10 min. She listened to his heartbeat measured me swabbed me which took like 5 seconds and then was done. Said ok you are done and left the room. Why do these doctors over book themselves so much that they make us wait so long and then it's over in 5 min. We have lives and a living to make too! I was mad anways and soo looking forward to seeing if I had made progress but she was to worried about getting in and out. I had to wait 40 min why can't the next person! So I guess I am here wondering till my appt. next week  :( Damn doctors. Ok, vent over!

  • If you honestly think your doctor did not perform a medical check that you believe to be important to your prenatal care, because they were running behind schedule, then you need to bring it up to them.

But I would make sure they do internals at 36 weeks. Many offices don't. You cannpt really compare the experiences of women on TB to your own, in this respect, as all offices have different policies.

If they told you they were going to do an internal, and didn't, then I would follow up. But if you were just assuming you would have one because of what you have read here, I would check to make sure that is how your office does things first.

I understand you being upset from having to wait so long but are your sure that your OB routinely does internals? If you really wanted one you could have asked. Also, I don't believe that doctors routinely overbook themselves, it is more likely that she had a delivery to do or maybe an emergency. At your appt next week you should ask for an internal if you really want it. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I know when I was pregnant with DS (he just turned 2) they did regular internals. I assume things haven't changed since then, but not positive. I could have asked but it almost seemed like well she knew she was behind so she could rush through my appt. knowing it didn't have to be long so she didn't offer, and I would have felt odd asking for one. I remb with DS the 1st one I had gotten he had asked me before he did it and I approved so he went along with it. And it was not a rushed appt. at all. I know sometimes they can have deliveries and such but I guess what bothered me the most is I sat there for 10 mins first when I heard her walk in the room next to mine and start that appt. I could hear everything clearly through the walls. So ok 10 min is normal but she had just started an appt. with someone after I was already waiting 10 min. I also heard her on the phone with like 3 diff. people before coming into my room. It was just really irritating.

  • My OB doesn't do routine internals either. And I always plan on appointments taking much longer than scheduled because that's the way it usually goes. An apology would have been nice, though.
  • I am seeing MW's but they are apart of an OB office and they gave me a standard paper that applies to all patients and they do not do an internal until 38 weeks.  If they deem is necessary they will do one at 39 otherwise they do it again at 40.  I think every office is different.  I wanted to know, but I just decided that being told I am at 1 or 2 could be false hope!

  • I can understand your frustration and I am sorry your appt didn't go the way you thought it would. And yes an apology would have been nice. But for me when I go to my office if I am seeing the dr I know that I might be sitting there for a few minutes because she is busy. I don't think they overbook but sometimes they have emergency appts and things happen that are beyond their control. And if your dr was on the phone with someone maybe it was someone who was in labor and needed questions asked or something. I know it wasn't great leaving you sitting there and things but I am sure that for whatever their was for it, that it might have been a good one.

  • I'd be annoyed about the wait, but that seems pretty common with doctors offices. I waited in the waiting room for an hour on multiple occasions... but at least I had my pants on. I wouldnt worry about not getting an internal yet, I just had my 35 week appt yesterday and they did the group B swab but no internal. I was kinda relieved, I doubt I'm anywhere near dilated and it would just hurt. I had one done when I thought my water broke around 30 weeks and it wasnt especially pleasant.

  • Glad you all understand my frustration. Hopefully next time they might fill me in. I also just realized she didn't even check to make sure he was head down still were as the last 3 appts I have had they all feel and make sure he is head down. We have 5 docs in the practice and you have to see each one at least once b/c whoever is on call will deliver your baby. That was my first time seeing her and I will prob. just make sure I don't schedule with her anymore!

  • I had an internal done at 36 weeks because she did my GBS then and figured since she was gonna be in there she might as well do a quick check. I was thinning but not dilated. She didn't do one at my last appointment. I see a different doctor next week because she'll be on vacation and I'm not sure what he'll do.

FTR I didn't think the internal was that bad.. she was in and out in a few seconds. It was uncomfortable but I can't say it hurt.

  • Not much to add that's different than everyone else, but my doctor doesn't do internals at 36 weeks either.  At my appt last week she just did the swab for Strep B then the regular checks.  I wouldn't be too frustrated about that.

However, I do feel your pain with waiting.  I went to L&D for a scheduled NST at 12:15 the other day and had to wait in the lobby for a bed until almost 2:15.  I felt like after an hour of waiting, if they still didn't have room for me, let me reschedule.  I wanted to yell at someone, but it wasn't their fault that a large number of babies decided not to move that morning and they were swamped with walk-ins.  At least I got to wear my pants while I was waiting...

  • I would be mad over the long wait too. I changed drs at the beginning and one of the reasons was how long the dr would make me wait after getting called back.

I just had my 36 week appt though, and while I got swabbed I didn't get checked. They don't start doing internals until 38 weeks, unless you are having contractions before 36 weeks.

  • Waiting, especially without your pants, sucks. But at the same time, in a practice like an OB's office, I think it can be somewhat expected. They are a lot more likely to have emergencies than say an internal medicine Dr. At our practice, if you call with decreased movement, a fall, etc during business hours, they have you come in, rather than sending you to L&D. I've had to go in twice now for monitoring. While I know it didn't take my Dr long to handle my issue (the nurse did most of the work), that's still 5 minutes she didn't expect. A few of those and you've got quite a wait.

Now I do think that she could have been nicer, apologized for the wait and certainly made sure you felt like you had enough time with her. Just because she's having a crazy day, doesn't mean your care should suffer. Next week, ask them about their policy on internals and if you missed one, bring that up to the Dr that you do see. My practice does start internals at 36 weeks, though honestly, I would have been okay if she had decided to skip that first one. I don't think it was that bad, but I can't say I look forward to it.

  • I totally feel your pain.  My doc has 5 minute appointments (seriously...8:30, 8:35, 8:40...)...that is just a recipe for disaster.  Things happen and people want to talk, especially in an OB's office...maybe 10 minute appointments would be more reasonable? I've brought it up but they just shrug it off.  I've sat in the waiting room an hour past my appointment time (boss didn't like that) then in the exam room (no pants) for half an hour longer.  it sucks!  they apparently think the patient's time isn't nearly as valuable as the doctor's.  i've learned to make all my appointments for first thing in the morning.  that way i don't think he can be TOO far behind.

Between the time management issue and being completely UNinformative, i'll be looking for a new doc after kiddo is born.  seriously, asking "do you have any questions" is not preparing me for this birth in any way.  hmm...i wonder if allotting 10 minutes per appointment would allow him to maybe tell me something (anything) about what to expect, rather than me looking everything up myself.  oh well....i'll know better next time.

Sorry for hijacking your vent.  I feel your pain. :/
