Baby Name Drama

*Copied from August 2011*

Ok so my sister in law found out she was pregnant in January and is due 7 weeks after me with twins.  She does not know what she is having yet, of course.  With my son, the girl's name we picked out was Gracen Elizabeth, but as soon as she found out she was pregnant she said if it was a girl she was going to name her Graycen Tinlee.  Keep in mind she is 19 years old....so drama is her middle name.  Last night I sent her an e-mail asking her if she would be furious if we decided to go with our original name choice (from 3 years ago!) because after the ultrasound I really FELT like she was a Gracen...the same way I felt like my son was a Blaine.  She threw a fit and said she had that name picked out for years and she was definately wanting to use it (again, she is 19...how many years could she possibly have had it picked out?).  My mom says to just name her that if that is what we really want because I will have my little girl first...AND they don't even know if they will be girls (the doctor is pretty sure they are identical).  So....what would you do?  I am anti-drama and tempted to just scrap it....but I hate to throw out the name that I feel like fits her so well.

  • Name your daughter Gracen! And if your SIL names her daughter that...she will be the one that looks like she "copied" your name!
  • Tell her straight forward that no matter what you plan to name your child Gracen. That she of course can choose to name her daughter anything she wants, but it will not change your mind. I can bet you dollars to donuts that she will end up not naming her daughter Graysen.

Also, since she is pregnant with twins, don't bet she will be going full term, she may very well have her children first.

Re: claiming names- Don't do it, and don't let someone else do it to you! Here are the Cardinal Rules of Baby Naming:

    1. No one owns a name; therefore, nobody can steal "your" name.

    2. She who has a baby first, gets to name a baby first.

    3. It's your baby, therefore you get to pick the name you like.

    Hope that helps.

  • Grayson is a boy's name. Changing the spelling to Gracen doesn't change that.

And lmao @ the name "fitting her so well" ... she's not even born yet. How can you even claim that?

Name your kid whatever you want; you're due first.

  • Thanks everyone...that's kind of what I was thinking.  And yes, I do feel like it can fit her....it's a feeling you get that it's just RIGHT...so to each her own. :)

go for it-I know plenty of people who have names set in stone that are "right"-before the baby is born. Wish we had one we were that sure of Wink

  • I can't believe that two people like that name enough to fight over it.

Ditto pp re: no one owns a name. Also ditto re: Grayson is a boy's name ? and a fairly popular one!

    Ditto all of this.

And I do have to say - I was at the playground one day and a woman yelled after her DD.  What I heard and visualized was "grayson".  It just didn't sound nice for a girl, at all.  I know the spelling can make you think "oh, it looks like a girls name", but when said outloud, Gracen is Graycen is Grayson.  It's all the same name and it's so totally a boys name.

  • Yeah, there was no need to contact her about the name. Neither one of you owns it, so neither one of you has to ask permission.

This whole thing could be resolved by just not telling anyone the name. When asked from now on, just say, "We're deciding" or "We're not sure." Then announce her name when she's born. Simple, and truly anti-drama.

  • You get to name her whatever you want, you are giving birth first.  If you hold off, she may not even use it anyway.  I think you chose a pretty name, you should go with it.

  • Gracen sounds like a boy. I'd come up with something else and let your sister have that name.

    Yep, same here.

  • It's a boys name anyway, and imo it sounds like a name a 19 yr old would give to her daughter...

  • If this were me, I would pick a new name as there are so many beautiful names out there. That's just me. I would want to avoid the possibility of twinning a twin with a name plus I'd want to maintain a positive relationship with my family (although yes, I agree that your sister is in the wrong for wanting to claim the name, sometimes relationships are less about being right or wrong and more about just resolving the conflict). That said, this is all me.

But, if you feel strongly that Gracen must be it, then name your daughter that. If your sister has her twins first though, and she uses the name... well, the ball will be in your court to respond maturely and graciously.

  • If I were arguing over a name with a 19 y/o, I'd have to rethink a lot things.

    This!

  • Thanks everyone!  After discussing it with my husband, I think we are going to plan on using a different name for now....it's just not worth the drama.  If they do find out they are having two boys in May, we may revisit this name.  I appreciate everyone's input!
