f/u 18 month well visit

Tyler got one vaccine today at his well check, Hep A.  So that wasn't too bad.

But the real reason I'm following up is to say that it pays to be hyper vigilant about your child's health, their vaccine history and what's in the vaccines they receive.

I love, love, love our pediatrician.  She is in no way spacey, I'm very very comfortable putting the boys in her care and I feel like we have a great rapport.  But today when she was reviewing his vaccine record, she noticed that Tyler hadn't had his first chicken pox vaccine (and we are not on a delayed/altered schedule).  She was ready to have him get both Hep A and varicella.  However, varicella has eggs in it, and he isn't a good candidate for the vaccine due to his allergy to eggs.  So, he ended up not getting it today and probably won't for a long while.

I guess my advice is -- be aware of the vaccine schedule, and educate yourself on what's contained in those vaccines if your child has any history of allergies.  This is actually the second time I've had to remind our pedi of a food allergy to avoid him getting a certain shot.

  • Good for you for being super vigilant about those vaccines and what is contained in them!  I have a question about your pedi's office...are they all online with their patient records or do they still have their info in folders?  If it is a manilla type folder, perhaps you could ask that they write or put a red sticker on the outside that identifies Tyler has an allergy?  I know that with our pedi's office they do everything online (GHA) and they have an area at the top of the screen that shows the patient's allergy clearly.

And you probably know this already, but the flu vaccines have egg in them too.  My sister's kids can't get those vaccines because they are allergic to eggs.

They are all online.  I'm not really sure why it's not obvious that he has food allergies, or maybe she just was so caught up in what she was thinking that it wasn't on the top of her head.

Ditto on the flu vaccine, Tyler hasn't gotten one yet.

I REALLY miss certain things about GHA. Sometimes, you don't realize what you have...until you move practices.

Yes, I know that a lot of folks complain about the wait, etc. at their pedi's office...we've never waited for more than 5 minutes before going back to the exam rooms.  We do go to the Finneytown location, which is a lot smaller than their other locations.

My pedi office annoys me with this too.  Everytime we go in, they always say, "Ok, so she's allergic to dairy, peanuts and dogs."  And everytime I have to tell them to keep reading.  And then she says, "Oh, and soy and wheat and green beans."  Then I tell her again to keep reading.  I am not sure why all of her allergies aren't written on the front page of her record.  So annoying.
