VBAC

VBAC's In Oklahoma?

I am not currently pregnant but had my yearly appointment yesterday with my new OB/GYN. We recently moved to OK from MO and was so sad to leave my previous OB/GYN! He was amazing!

Anyway, I had a c-section with DS because he was face-presentation and large. After the surgery my former OB told me that a VBAC was a definite possiblity with how things went.

Fast-forward to yesterday: I am talking with my new OB/GYN about DH and I starting to TTC this fall and my plans for a VBAC when she completely took the rug out from under me. PLICO - Oklahoma's biggest malpractice insurance does not allow OB's to perform VBAC's! WTF! I'm so disappointed right now, I cried the entire was home from my appointment.

I am not comfortable going with a homebirth midwife and would like to deliver in a hospital but I am trying to figure out if anyone else has ever encountered anything like this! I keep calling offices and none of them do VBAC's.  Is there a listing of doctors who perform them?  I never thought it would be this hard with all of the information and studies out there supporting VBAC's.

Re: VBAC's In Oklahoma?

  • I found this for you. There are two hospital options listed. I hope that helps.

  • Thank you for the information.  I'm in the Tulsa area and can only find information on OB's in the Oklahoma City area.  I'm so frustrated with this!
  • I just had my second VBAC in Oklahoma last week :)  Oklahoma is not the most VBAC friendly place, but there are a few places that "do" VBAC.  PLICO won't cover docs with VBAC, but there are some docs who have different insurance.

As the link PP posted says, St. Anthony and OU Medical have docs whose insurance covers VBAC (and I have heard sort of through the grapevine that Moore Medical has one doc who will do VBAC as well).  I know people will sometimes come to OKC from Tulsa to VBAC because there are more options here, but if you don't want to make the drive in labor (and I don't blame you!) there is one doctor that I know of in Tulsa whose insurance allows VBAC.  His name is Dr. Thompson and I think he is at St. Francis, but I might be off on that.  I have 4 friends who have had successful VBA2C with him and if you would like to talk with them you can PM me your email address and I can pass it along.

I know you said you don't want a homebirth, but you might call the homebirth midwives there and explain your situation.  Oftentimes they know of doctors who do VBAC but don't really advertise it.

  • Thanks for the info!

I just looked up Dr. Thompson and will give his office a call tomorrow!

  • Where are how did your friends VBA2C?  With Dr. Thompson?  At St. Francis? I just failed my VBAC due to baby heart rate and pushy doctors.  The only way I'll have another child (God willing) is with my Va-JJ.  I don't want to be cut in half ever again.  Since I haven't sworn off more kids yet, I am already looking for a doctor (or midwife) that will allow VBA2C.  I think even if I try and fail, I'd give it a go since I'm totally doing even more homework about it now that I feel my VBAC was taken away.  Thanks for any help on VBA2C.
