Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can your LO go from laying to sitting?

DS doesn't know how to sit himself up yet. If he is playing on the floor and gets on his back or belly, he seems quite content to stay that way and makes no effort to get into a sitting position. I have witnessed him pulling himself to sitting once or twice when he was slightly elevated already (like on a pillow or something). Just wondering what other LOs about his age are doing (he will be 10 months next week).

  • My DS is the same age, and also can't get to sitting from laying.  If he's laying back on the boppy, he can sometimes push himself back up to sitting, but not from the ground.

  • DD can only do it when she is in her crib so she grabs a hold of the rails and pulls herself to a sitting position from there. I forgot to mention that is she is laying on me when I am laying against the couch then obviously she can do it quite easily.

  • DS just started pushing himself up to the sitting position last weekend.  We're not even crawling just yet.  Beginning stages though.

  • She struggles to go straight from back to sitting position. But if she's on her back on the floor, she just rolls on her hip/side and then up to a sitting position. Does that count?

  • Yes, he started at around 7.5 months doing it- just randomly started doing it one day. He started crawling on all 4's at exactly 8 months old.
  • Yes, he started doing it shortly after he turned 7 mos old, and then he started crawling about 10 days later.
  • Yes, but he just started doing it and did it before he started crawling.  DS gets up on his hands and knees like he's going to crawl and then pushes himself back to be sitting.  I wouldn't worry about it - he might just like to be on his tummy!  DS still hates being on his tummy so he was motivated to learn how to do it.

This is what my DS does too. He started this when he first started to crawl.

  • Yes, probably around 10 months or so. He was a late crawler too (10 1/2 months) But he does both with ease now! Can't keep him lying down anymore!
  • Thanks ladies! I think he really does like to be in his back or tummy, he is usually on the floor most of the day like that. He doesnt crawl really well yet, still army crawling. We have wood floors though so he gets around pretty easily. I know every baby is different but i cant help but compare him to my neice who is a month younger. She can get herself to a seated position and crawls much better. But she is also a little peanut and DS us a chunky monkey so i guess the extra weight might be holding him back, haha.
