What did you wear to deliver?

I'm trying to figure out what to wear during my birthing time. Obviously I need a gown/dress/nightie of some sort, but I also want quick and easy access to my chest so I can get immediate skin-to-skin contact with LO. What did you wear?

Re: What did you wear to deliver?

  • A bikini top!

(Oh - but I never got to the pushing stage with DD...but that's what I labored in while in the tub).

  • I showed up at the hospital (after 23 hours of labor at home!) in stretchy black pants, a maternity tank and a longsleeved shirt over that. Oh, and flip flops (in November!) I stripped to get in the tub at some point and only ever put the tank back on. When LO was born, they put her on my chest and I just pulled the straps of the tank down. Eventually I changed into a nursing hospital gown- yes they make those! After my first shower I put on a nursing bra and a tank. When I wanted skin to skin I would just take off the shirt and bra! I thought I would care about what I was wearing when I went to the hospital and when she was born, but it was the FARTHEST thing from my mind. My only rec. is make sure you are wearing something you don't mind getting dirty!

  • a bra.   I had the gown on as well, but I can't remember if it was all the way on or not.
  • with baby #2, i planned to wear a loose fitting pj tank top and yoga pants and lose the pants when i got in the tub. instead, i lost everything long before the tub!

with baby #1, i had hot flashes and alternated between being covered in a robe and my birthday suit.

  • I had a towel wrap, since I was in and out of the pool, but wanted some modesty.  It was comfy, and easy to BF in right away.

  • I wore a maternity tank dress for the beginning - I went to the OB's office to get checked before we went to the hospital and that was way easier than trying to take off pants!

Once at the hospital, I wore one of the hospital's nursing gowns some of the time, but mostly I was nekkid - either in the tub or in the shower.  Labor was so incredibly messy (I bled through most of it) that I would never want to wear my own things!

I never got skin-to-skin (other than for maybe 60 seconds) because DD was having respiratory distress and needed oxygen, but the nursing gown easily slipped down/off so that I could have.

  • My birthday suit!

I labored at home in yoga pants, a long sleeved t-shirt, and I think, a tank.  This is what I wore to the hospital and for the first bit during initial monitoring.  Then I stripped down and got in the shower/tub.  I think after I got out of the tub, I put a gown on for a very short time, but it was annoying & hot so from then on, I was naked.  During skin-to-skin, I think I was still naked & covered with blankets.  Then I slipped a gown on to walk to the shower and the rest of the time I was there (about 24 more hours), I just wore the hospital gown & mesh panties.  I honestly didn't even think about it at all.

  • 95% of my labor was at home and I wore just a bra and a t-shirt.  Then, to get to the hospital I wore a maternity dress instead of the t-shirt because I couldn't stand anything around my waist.  Literally the moment I walked into my suite I stripped off the dress so only wore a bra.  That's what I ended up delivering in but that was only a few minutes later.  I'm sure if I had gotten into the tub I would have taken that off too.  About an hour after birth I put on a hospital gown but once I had a shower I put on my own clothes.  I think pajama pants and a t-shirt but I can't remember.
  • This is a funny question for me to answer because one of my biggest surprises about labor was that I turned into "that naked lady" who honestly did not care who saw me naked.  I hit transition and suddenly was bothered by the idea of wearing clothes.  So skin to skin contact wasn't a problem! This time around I am hoping to maintain a shred of modesty, so I am thinking a bikini top or a thin, simple, no-underwire bra.  You really don't "need" a gown, but of course it's fine if you want it.

  • For my first birth, I wore a sports bra and had a blanket on me while I was sitting on a yoga ball because I didn't want to wear a hospital gown.  When it came to pushing, I just had my sports bra on.

At my homebirth, I started off in yoga pants and a cotton shirt.  I had a nursing bra that I wore in the tub and when I got out, I wore a stretchy skirt for awhile.  For pushing again, I just wore my nursing bra.  It was really warm in my room so the thought of wearing anything else was unbearable!

I liked the nursing bra better than the sports bra because it was easier for BFing and easier to get off and on.

  • I wore a henley nightgown so I was able to unbutton the top for easy breast access.  It still wasn't the most attractive thing in the world but it worked and it was comfortable and it wasn't a hospital gown, lol.

This time, I'm going to wear a sleep tee with a nursing bra underneath and black hipster panties.

  • I just wore the hospital gown once I got there. During the pushing stage, I ripped it off because I got too hot (pushed for 3 hours). So, nothing. And I couldn't have cared less! (Except all of my first pictures with my son are ones I can't show anyone since I'm naked LOL...oh well...)

  • stretchy pants, panties, tank top, and a lacy brown bra (just what i happened to have on at the time).  i took off the pants and panties when it was time to push.  after dd was born, the midwives had me pull up my shirt to put dd on my chest.  i also took the bra off.  after a shower i changed into a nursing nightie and nursing bra, but i found it too difficult to nurse in the nursing nightie (those slits just weren't made for huge boobs), so i just wore a tank top.

  • I labored at home in my PJs because labor started early in the morning.  When I got to the hospital I wore their gown until I got into the bath.  I didn't wear anything for the five hours I spent in the bath.  When I got out to push they wrapped a towel around me, but I pretty much pushed naked, I didn't care.  After I had my DD they put a nursing gown on me.
  • A bikini top and nothing else.

  • I labored in a nursing tank and skirt and planned to wear the tank in the tub to deliver.  I got in the tub and labor stalled, so I had to get out.  I didn't feel like wearing a wet tank all day, so I changed into a T-shirt.  Then the next time I got into the tub I decided to throw on a maternity bathing suit top.  That's what I ended up delivering in.
