Yesterday the doctor told me I was gaining too much. (19 pounds up total and 9 in the past month) Blah. I am always the first person to say "It's fine. Everyone gains differently. Just eat healthy and be active," on anyone's post that is worried about weight gain. But, just hearing it from the doctor really sucked. I don't care how much I have to take off after she's born, but I don't want to put myself at risk for GD or make her too big of a baby..so I feel like I'm being a crappy mom. I've really been trying to be active and healthier for the past few weeks but I guess I'll have to try harder. It's just so weird...weight was never an issue and then I got pregnant and the pounds just started rolling in! Not looking for sympathy, I know I have to try harder...just want to tell the ladies who have heard the famous, "You are gaining too much," from their docs, that now I know how much it sucks to hear that!
Re: "you are gaining too much"
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Pregnancy hormones can block insulin from doing its job. When this happens, glucose levels may increase in a pregnant woman's blood.
You are at greater risk for gestational diabetes if you:
Are older than 25 when you are pregnant
Have a family history of diabetes
Gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds or had a birth defect
Have sugar (glucose) in your urine when you see your doctor for a regular prenatal visit
Have high blood pressure
Have too much amniotic fluid
Have had an unexplained miscarriage or stillbirth
Were overweight before your pregnancy
I'm so sorry that you heard that. I know exactly how you feel. You definitely are not being a crappy mom, so try not to let yourself feel that way (I know that's hard). It's hard to gain so much weight so quickly, especially when you are eating well.
Like you said, everyone gains differently in pregnancy. If you are eating right, then your body is gaining what it needs. What's most important is that you and baby are healthy. (I have to tell myself this every day.)
Um, misconception, the amount of weight you gain during pregnancy does not correlate to baby's weight. I am considered obese and the chances of me having a larger baby are slim, per the OB and the genetic specialist. My best friend gained 60 lbs during her 1st pregnancy and he baby was 7lbs, pretty average. I had a friend that gained 20 lbs and her baby was almost 10 lbs.Its all relative.
Could it be mostly water weight? Don't stress out about it. I'm sure that you are making healthy choices for you and LO and that's really all you can do...
I'm sure you are a beautiful woman and your baby will be beautiful as well!!
I know this is true...and I rememeber your post a few days ago so I know you know how I feel! Hearing it from the doc is definitely not a good feeling! Thanks for the encouragment.
I've gained 14 pounds so far (7 since last appt), and Tuesday my doc said to me, "We were doing so well with the weight. What happened? Let's try to keep it low." I wanted to tell her to kiss my A**! I think my weight is fine (especially given how much I eat. LOL).
This is good to hear! Thank you so much! Yes, I'm more worried about piling it on than taking it off! And I guess GD and high birth weight are not correlated to weight gain, so that makes me feel a lot better!
This is true! My mom gained 27lbs and had my 10lb 2oz brother, and next time she gained 28lbs and had me... a whopping 6lbs!
I also gained 9 lbs from my 20 week to my 24 week appointment. My OB asked what happened and said I needed to start watching everything I eat and to stop drinking things like fruit juice (but the baby reeeealllyyy loves grapefruit juice). I am being tested for GD 2 weeks earlier than normal, but I have a family history. My father has Type 2 diabetes and so did two of my grandparents. I am up a total of 25 lbs, and even though the recommendation is to gain 25-35lbs, I feel if I go 5lbs over it's NOT going to be a huge deal. I also think some of it is water.
