Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Six Mos & not STTN- up every two hours

DD is six months old and not STTN, which isn't a big deal, but she is up every two hours and sometimes won't calm down unless she eats (bottle or nurse).  This has been going on for almost six weeks now and it's wearing on me.  I don't think it's a growth spurt, but it could be teething since she recently cut a tooth.

I've tried her on rice cereal around dinner time to help fill her up and she looks at me like I'm nuts and pushes it out of her mouth.

I need help- suggestions- anything to help me get through this. I'm so tired!! CIO it not an option because I don't like it at this age and I have a two year old she'll wake up.

TIA!

  • No help since I'm in the exact same spot, just to let you know you're not alone.  Good luck!

  • I'm not saying you should CIO if you don't want to, but this is the ideal time to do it.  I know it sounds less "mean" to wait until they're older, but at this age they're more receptive and it will go quicker.

  • You mentioned giving her rice cereal around dinnertime-have you started her on solids (fruits/veggies) yet? Sounds like its a good time to start, she seems to be hungry if she's waking up all night to eat.

You're probably right, but even in the middle of the night?  She is a dream to put to bed. I feed her, lay her down awake/drowsy, cover her w/her blanket, a pacifier, and she's usually out.  It's when she wakes up in the middle of the night.  We'll do CIO around 10-12 months like we did w/our son.

  • I just want to say that you aren't alone--I'm in the same position exactly and am at the end of my rope.  Good Luck, Mama.  This too shall pass.

This may be dumb, but can I skip the rice/oatmeal and go right to veggies/fruits?  My son ate the rice/oatmeal so easily.

  • I went through this with DS. For me, I would check on him the first time to ensure he wasn't wet. I would only give him a bottle if it had been at least 6 hours since his last bottle & rock him to sleep. Any wake ups after that I would let him fuss. I know you said this wouldn't work because of your todddler, but you don't want your DD to get used to you coming to her every time she cries when there is nothing she needs (diaper change, feeding, etc.) Using this technique, I got the night time bottle cut out in two weeks & him sleeping through the night two weeks after that. It is a tiring process, but worth it in the end. But as always, you need to do what works best for you, this is just my suggestion. GL!

You absolutely can! I had Lucas on oatmeal only for maybe a week or so, then added in fruits. If she's crawling/scooting around she's burning up more calories and may need 2 meals. Start out slow and see how she does, but it might help.

Yes, for the most part you can skip the cereal. My DS hated it! However, he is FF, so he gets the iron he needs from his formula. THe cereal is recommended because it's high in iron. If you choose not to give the cereal, you would just have to make sure you are offering LO other options with iron.

But...you don't like to eat things you don't like, so why force them on LO?

  • My LO's 6 month check up was yesterday and I asked pedi about this since my LO is still not STTN either.  He asked if he was awake when we put him down for the night, he always falls asleep during his last bottle- so the answer was no.  Pedi said since I was there when he fell asleep LO assums you will be there when he wakes...so try to start earlier so he is still awake but drowsy when we put him down.  He also suggest the CIO as well, he said at 6 months it would be okay for him to cry for up to 30 minutes- since babies are usually sleeping while crying (I don't know about this)....I don't like the idea of him crying for 30 minutes on his own, so we may not take that advice- but I am going to try to put him down earlier to see what happens...GL!

  • Maybe look into the No-Cry Sleep Solution. We adopted some methods from that book and were able to reduce DS awakenings a good amount.

    This.

Is she sleeping good during the day? Is she getting enough calories throughout the day? Try offering more solids along with bottles/nursing sessions.

If she isn't sick or teething.. CIO really works.  But obviously you have to be comfortable with it.  If you are going to do it- be consistent, otherwise you will just confuse her. I did a modified CIO at 4 months and they caught on in a few days and now sleep amazing!

  • I don't know what to tell you.  I was ticked when J started waking up at 2 to eat for a week or so, I can't imagin going back to every 2 hours.

What does he want when he wakes up? Paci, rocking, food? How long do you let him go before you go it to the room?

Last night J woke up at midnight, just grunting and rolling around, I was able to flip him over on his tummy and he went right back to sleep until 5:30.
