Pregnant after a Loss

38w appt...progress!

OK, so I asked for an internal today because I'm impatient like that.  I am 1cm dilated and almost completely effaced.  She marked it on my chart as 90% effaced, but said, "in reality, you're just about completely effaced".  I don't know what that means, but it's better than nothing, right?

The bad(ish) news today:  My belly grew again to 42cm.  I'm officially huge.  The dr told me to expect between a 9 and 10 pound baby based on the fundal height and the measurements from last Saturday's growth u/s. She also said that I am just below the cutoff where they would suggest scheduling a c-section and told me to prepare myself for the possibility of needing a c-section due to the size of the baby.  She knows how much I want to do this naturally and wanted to make sure that I won't feel like a failure if that just can't happen.  She did reassure me that the measurements are not an exact science, just an estimate, and that we won't really know what my body is capable of until we get to that point.  She promised that they will do everything possible to avoid induction and a c-section.  I trust her, but it breaks my heart a little to think about a c-section.

Anyway, progress is progress, right?!

  • 90% effaced is good, VERY good. You'll be having your baby soon!
  • Good news.  People deliver 9 and 10 pounders successfully everyday.  It sounds like you'll be having that baby soon!!
  • Yay for progress...try not to worry too much about the csection. I had one and am not dreading having one again. Actually am glad to have one and know what to expect.

  • Progress is good news... and I am sending you all of the natural labor dust that I can :-)
  • Oh wow!  Come on, fat baby!
  • Progress is definitely progress! I still think my prediction of a Nov 2 or 3 baby will come true. Which would be good so she doesn't get much bigger and you can still push her out!

My doc gave me a whole lecture yesterday about how "off" the weight measurements can be. She said in her experience, the babies are usually not as big as they think they're gonna be. I am worried about getting my rapidly expanding child out naturally as well, so I am taking that advice to heart.

We will perservere, Berty, even with our JumboBabies!!

  • 90 % effaced! That's great!! Yeah, I would *try* not to worry about a c-section until that time actually comes. Easier said than done, I know. :)
  • Woo hoo! Congrats on the progress Berty!  You may indeed see your MP sooner than you think!

  • 90% is really good. I read somewhere that effacement was better than dialation, but I'm not totally sure. They mess up measurements all the time.
  • Pffft... again with the big baby ultrasound scares.  They are often SO inaccurate. Its beginning to drive me crazy.

Trust your body, Berty! It knows what its doing. Your baby will come when he or she is good and ready, at just the right time.

  • Hi Tiffany!  Progress IS progress.  Congratulations!  I will keep only positive thoughts in mind for you that you have a natural birth.  It sounds like your physician is WONDERFUL!
