Re: what was the first scary movie you ever watched?

  • I don't know if this qualifies as a scary movie but it scared the crap out of me. The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. I was probably 6 or so when it came out. The whole thing really freaked me out but I cannot remember a full scene. Something about a greenhouse.

ETA: It came out in 1992 so I was 8. I probably saw it when I was 9 or 10.

  • I saw Poltergeist. I was 3 or 4. And I looked A LOT like the little girl they took.

I really remember the TV scene where she says "They're here" of course. But I really remember the closet lighting up and all that.

I wouldn't go near closets for weeks. I thought because I looked like the little girl the closet people would get me.

Nightmare on Elm Street. I was about 7 or 8, though it came out a few year before then. The scene where Freddie is running down the alley with his arms outstretched and claw scraping the walls always scared the sh!t out of me.

This is the only part of any of those movies I've seen. And I still have nightmares about him. Freddie is my re-occuring nightmare but I'm always still a kid in my dream.

  • It.

I saw the shower scene when I was maybe 6 or 7. I didn't want to shower for a very long time, and when I did, I had to have my foot over the drain. I was convinced that if my foot wasn't over the drain, then the clown would come up and eat me.

I still don't really like to shower, LOL. That movie is the reason I'm a dirtball.

  • The first one I remember watching was silence of the lambs ... it was on TV and I was like 8. My family was all watching it and my parents actually let me stay up and watch it with them, IDK what they were thinking! LOL.
The scene that scared me the most was when she went down to the basement in the pitch black and he was following her around, I actually had my bedroom in the basement of our house with a similar look to that(one corner was my finished room). I was scared for years over that movie and then watched it as an adult and was like, "WTF?! That's not THAT scary" LOL.

This was my first one too. I was about the same age! My scene though was the one where Johnny Depp died while asleep on his bed. Scared the pee out of me. I couldn't sleep well for a week.

I mean seriously, a killer that can only get to you in your sleep, when you think you're safe. That's just wrong.

  • Nightmare on Elm Street!

I think I was in the 1st or 2nd grade.  My brother was a jerk and played it while I was in the room.  I remember going outside after watching it and seeing "claw" marks on a tree and I totally thought Freddy Krueger was in my back yard/house somewhere.  I wouldn't walk past the basement stairs for weeks...

  • Little Shop of Horrors scared the hell out of me. I was probably 6 or 7? I think my parents misjudged the amount of gore that would be in it.

  • I'm not sure if it was the first one, but the one that sticks out is Halloween.  I was probably 8 or 9 and it haunted me for literally years.  I feel that any sleep issues I go through with my boys now is payback for all those nights of sleeping with my parents because I was scared!  I still cannot watch any slasher movies.  And if DH isn't home overnight, I sleep with all the lights on.

Yeah I know it's not a "scary movie" but when you're 3 or 4 -- aliens scare the sh!t out of you. I hate alien movies to this day. Can't watch any of them.

Poltergeist was the first actual horror movie I saw. I looked like Carol Ann too. My Mom didn't like seeing me sit in front of the TV when I was little. Said it reminded her too much of Poltergeist. Hah.

  • 6 yo, Salem's Lot.  Terrifying.  I had nightmares about vampires for months.  The parents paid dearly for letting me watch it.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Actually I just remembered that I watched The Shining, I was probably 5, maybe 4.  I only remember this because it was at our old house and I was only living there til I was 5 or 6!  I remember the part at the end of the movie in the snow storm.  It didn't really scare me though, Freddy scared me more.

  • A nightmare on elmstreet movie.  I was 7.  My brother made me watch it.  There was something where Freddy came out of a mirror in someone's bedroom.  I was terrified of mirrors for years.  After that introduction, I hate scary movies!

I"m actually not sure...my parents were really strict on that stuff.  But I remember watching a scene in a movie at a friend's house and someone was buried to their neck in the sand and the tide was coming in so he was screaming because he was going to drown.

Scared the ever-loving bajeeezus out of me.

I believe that was Creep Show.

    ETA: edited to add linky.

Sounds like one of the short stories in Creepshow.  Was it Ted Danson or Leslie Nielson?

I saw this one for the first time in college (with my H, his fraternity brother/roomate and his girlfriend) and thought it was one of the stupidest movies ever - I kind of thought the clown in the movie looks a bit like Ronald McDonald, and that made me laugh hysterically.  But I do see how it's scary for a child watching it.

I can see how as an adult it might not be scary. But as a kid? When the clown eats kids? In the shower? Oh man, it's freaking scary, haha.

Poltergeist for me too. It was one of the few movies I saw in movie theater. I was about 12 - and I still don't like clowns.

  • Kujo. I was 6 years old. I asked my dad if Kujo was dead at one point, and he said yes. All of a sudden, Kujo jumps through the door. I yelled and screamed at my dad, calling him a liar. The movie got paused, and I had to be talked to.

Other than Kujo, it was the Nightmare on Elm Street movies.

Kujo is so scary! When that movie came out, the little boy was the same age as my brother and had the same name. My mom said it really freaked her out.

Arachnaphobia. I saw it at a neighbor's house...was prob around 8 or so.

::rocks back and forth in the corner::

    I'm still terrified of spiders

My sister used to threaten to tie me to a chair and make me watch that movie. Thankfully, she never did. We're not close at all, I wonder why?

Willow.  It was not meant to be a scary movie but little people scared the crap out of me when I was young and there was a baby in it who got lost and like floated down a river?  My sister was born when I was 5 and I had constant nightmares that someone was going to steal her.  So that movie freaked me out.

The first movie I remember watching that was meant to be scary was Candyman at a 3rd grade sleep over.  We had to stop it halfway through because two of the girls were so scared they wanted to go home.  It was awesome.  I love scary movies.

Nightmare on Elm St and Poltergeist were around then too.

  • Carrie! It had to be in the early 80's. It was on TV. My sister was babysitting me and she made me put all my crayons away before I could watch it.

  • The Shining at a sleepover in 5th grade. I had to leave the room and go play Oregon Trail with my friend's little brother because I couldn't handle it.

  • Poltergeist, I was around 5 years old and loved that movie. The part I remember the most is "their hear"!

  • I was probably 8 and I really only saw a part of it. Nightmare on Elm Street. The scene I remember was where the kid got diced up into little pieces on the bed. And the bathtub scene where she kept falling asleep, but would wake up before Freddy could get her.

It was so bad that for years afterwards, I would ALWAYS check behind the shower curtain before I sat down to go to the bathroom.

  • imageMrs.Bones:
I did not find The Shining to be scary at ALL.

I would say "Well, I was 10 at the time" but I'd probably still be scared today! I hate scary movies, even stupid ones. I had to watch "Scream" in the day time. lol

  • "The Towering Inferno." I was six. I recall a woman falling to her death. I had nightmares for months.

Now I study 9/11 imagery in art. Heh.

  • Chucky. I saw it when I was 5 or 6. I don't remember any specific scene but after I saw it I didn't sleep with my Ernie anymore.
