state of md custody

If you live in the state of MD, how did the custody thing work? I was advised at the courthouse that I file paperwork, have it served, and a court date follows. 5 weeks later ive heard nothing and when I check the MD judiciary case search it shows as filed and closed on the same day, even when the papers weren't even served to him yet. A friend of mine said the custody is completed once he signs the form served to him acknowledging that he agrees to those terms. Did i seriously just spend $180 to have a paper I filled out on my own just simply served to him?

    I live in MD, not sure how it all works though.  I didn't plan on filing for custody (XH moved out of state).  Is that a mistake?  I plan on filing for child support which I already have the paperwork ready (just need LO to arrive so I can fill in a few blanks).  I assumed I am the custodial parent unless XH tries to file otherwise.
